I used to chase turkeys spring and fall about 15 years ago !

Then I realized Sika Deer are a better option !

Only downfall is the GD mosquitoes in the marshes of Dorchester County !

All BS aside I'm out of the country and was unable to go spring hunting before I left

My spring hunt lasted 30 mins. I was letting the dog out to pee and heard some gobbles at the end of my property. Sent the dogs inside, grabbed a gun and a call and ran to the end of the property. Made a couple of calls and three toms came running at me. I froze and when one came out from behind a tree, bang. Short but very exiting.

Wierdest season I've seen ever.

Toms will fire up and close the disatance hard then just shut down. Had it happen at least 8 times this spring. Even been calling the hens off the toms but the gobbler won't come with them.

Danged goofy spring. I can't figure it.

Sika Deer are actually small elk that originated in this country from Japan .
Those that made up the herd in VA and MD were released about 1916 .

You can hunt them on federally owned land in Virginia and Maryland as well as all of Dorchester County in Maryland .

There are also places in Texas and a few other states that have huntable herd . Although these are mostly pay to hunt operations .

#1 , don't take this the wrong way , but I ain't gonna fight the bugs in the Blackwater for a turkey !

And I'm not sure a Thermacell will help that much there in the spring !

The area you were in should have a fair amount of whitetails as well I would think !

Although I'm not driving all the way from central Virginia to Cambridge just for a whitetail :D

I have a turkey story on my blogspot.

http://bigbore442001.blogspot.com/

This is a great first for me as I limited out my Massachusetts tags with a bow and arrow. Last year was horrible. Not one deer or turkey. This year I got two gobblers and Dad got one with his crossbow. I hope that this is an omen of a good season. I think I have one or two packages of venison left in the freezer.
