I am considering making my own jacketed rifle bullets. Is there a good place to start? Bought some .22cal bullets from a benchrester who made them himself.
I consider it a good way to pass the time in the winter months and want to get set up with equipment now.
While I know this is a cast bullet forum, I wondered if anyone has info on the subject.
Thanks

Welcome to the Forum,sparks1
Swaging is not as popular as casting;probably because it costs more.
First;you need some books to read. The Corbin books are as good as any.Someone here, will offer other good books.
Second;you will need a tool with dies. The Corbin tool is excellent;but very expensive.I never seriously considered buying one. There are used tools and dies available on the Web for a fraction of the cost, but they are usually only strong enough for pistol bullets.
Third;you will need componants, and will discover why swaging is lss popular then casting. You need jackets and cores.Jackets can be made only with additional tools and equipment;aso expensive.
I know of no source of ready made cores at a resonable price. Most are made from pure lead wire, cut with a special tool,to proper length. You can buy,or make a mold to cast your own cores.ou can also cut to lenght, soft cast bullets.I recently sacrificed some .308 bullets for .357 bullet cores.
It is fun,though.Good luck.

Yeah I see Corbins is "the" place. It is a consideration. Reason I thought of it ,is a guy from work is giving me about 250 lbs of lead. Some ingots and some what he calls plumbers lead. Got about 75 lbs already in strips he called the plumbers lead.
Since I have never shot cast bullets or knew about them, I figured I would make the regular jacketed.
Reckon I have alot of reading to do. Thought it would be almost a necessity considering the shortage of rifle bullets available on the market. A person may not go wrong preparing for more extreme shortages.
Thanks for the info...I will be reading more here from now on.
P.S.
Saw our gun club now has a cast bullet shoot. I will check with those guys to learn more also.

Mr. Corbin, Dave on his web site(s) has posted his book "Rediscover Swagin #9" for study and download and review and etc. Sans pictures... If you buy the book you get the pictures... He has a collection that is worth the investment IMHO.

Mr. Corbin has a brother Richard at rceco.com who also has a book on his web site. Dave is the more prolific.

A thorough review of this material should tell you if you wish to proceed. Many would scream BORING. If you have the temperament... make your own of even sell some (with class VI FFL) ... enjoy... luck.
