It looks like this catagory needs a new thread so....how about a 35 Rem case shortened to the shoulder (+/-) and sized to take .429 dia. bullets ??? The 35 Rem case is pretty similar to the 7.62x39 case in the rear areas and wouldn't require much change to the SKS mag. The shortened case should size easily to 44cal. and the overall cartridge length could be adjusted to keep the OAL to the right length. Any input would be appreciated. This wildcat should work in a SKS !!!!!!!!!! HD1:cool:

I also have a interest in such a wildcat, my desired features are as follows, must feed from a standard sks magazine with little modification, must fit bolt faces and extractors designed for 7.62x39 with little modification, should be no less than .35 caliber and should be able to be fire formed or easily re-sized from standard readily available brass.

Tjrahl: Take a look at my newest "Brainstorm". I think the 35 Rem case will fit your specifications as well as mine. OAL will be no problem since the case can be trimmed. The rim dia. is .460 dia., only .20 larger than the 7.62.39 case and the case body dia. is such that the mag follower would only need slightly altered. The inside dia. of the 35 Rem case at the shoulder is .4259, easily sized to accept .429 bullets. To my knowledge, brass is still readily available for 35 Rem. in quantity. The chamber pressure should be no issue whatsoever since it will be a straightwall case. I have examples of both cases and will do some experimenting with the mag. follower this afternoon. I see no reason why an SKS rifle couldn't shoot this wildcat !!! Now, if a 300gr. load could be safely worked up.........................??? HD1

Tjrahl: I just did some preliminary testing with a shortened 35 Rem case in the SKS mag. It works with no changes to the follower what-so-ever. I tried both an as-issued 10 rd. and an aftermarket 10 rd. and both seemed to accept the shortened case just fine, maybe a little better than the parent cartridge does.
Feeding will probably need to be tweaked a bit due to the larger diameter bullet and all, but I don't think it will be much of a problem. HD1

Stick with me...this will get around to the subject at hand.

One of the ways to make .401WSL cases is to lathe or swage a 7.62X39 case's base enough to form a semi-rim and blow the case out more or less straight (slightly tapered) to take .406-408" bullets.

Now from a BLOWBACK action, limited to about 35K pressure, and limited to powders in the 2400 burn rate (or the block back action tends to open while the powder is still burning), can get 250gr. to 1800 - 1875fps.

Given a locked breech gas operated action (like an SKS), the 35 Rem. base case, should be able to boost pressure to 7.62X39 levels and use powders a bit slower in rate....so I'd guess that 250@ 2200-2300fps would be possible, with 300's coming close to 1950-2000fps.

I'm probably coming into this topic well after the fact, but if you want a 35 caliber cartridge that runs on the 7.62x39 case, have you checked out the 358 Gremlin? The link is posted below and it looks like it would be a fun gun to load for and shoot.

Sounds like you're describing the .44 Auto Mag. chambering in the SKS.

Actually Davers that's pretty much what I'm describing isn't it. I guess it's made off of different brass, but that's basically it. I just referenced the 35 Rem brass because the rim diameter was already closer in size to the rim on the 7.62x39 case. I would be satisfied with Automag balistics from an SKS !!!! HD1

I'll check out the Gremlin too...thanks Broom_jm

There is a lot of info on modding the 7.62x39 cases here for you guys. I think they talk about the 358 cal also along with the 6.5mm,25cal,30cal.7mm and others.
