I have 10lbs of hornady #1 buck I know its harder than wheel weight lead. Could I cast some 45-70 bullets out of it and can they be pushed to a little higher velocity???

This is just me talking, but if I had 10 lbs of buck I'd say that's useful to someone, and I'd put it up on eBay if I had no use for it. I don't see melting down something that would be dern near impossible for most folks to make. Melt down ingots...sell the buck shot. Especially if it has a brand name. Use USPS flat rate box and get it to someone who reloads shotshells.

I'm confident the answer to your question is 'yes'. But I'd think you'd be able to buy 20 to 30 lbs of lead on eBay for what the buckshot would sell for. I could be wrong, of course. It's a weird market.

I have 4 bags #6 and was thinking the same thing. due to the mess WW makes.
so far no info on it.

I would be interested in possibly trading wheel weight lead that is melted and cast into ingots already for the "4 bags #6" and "10lbs of hornady #1 buck".

PM me if interested.

Thank You

I'm about a month late on this but #6 shot is worth 40 bucks for a 25# bag or maybe more. I sure would not melt it down. I am just wondering about the mess with WW could you explain?

If it were me..I would go ahead andmelt it down and use it..You can do this and then use it to mix with pure lead to ake more bullets if you want...Like a 50-50 mix or whatever....I have shot loads of the chilled lead in cast bullets..Are you planning on hunting with it or just target shooting?

It'll work, but if it is like chilled shot it is a lead and antimony alloy and you will get better mold fill if you add a little tin. Most wheel weights always used to have a half percent tin (probably for that purpose, since they are cast). Now they are mainly a scrap product and who knows what's in them?

The main problem is economical. At an MSRP of $6 a pound, buckshot is an awfully expensive bullet alloy compared to buying wheel weights.

glad I saw this. I was handed 100 pounds of #6 Hornady shot last year for free. I figured I could turn it into ingots, then bullets but always wondered how hard it was and what Id need to mix it with. So Nick, what you are suggesting is like using some Plumbers Solder or WW (WW is crazy tough to get my hands on up here) to add some tin to it? Id like to get to about a Lyman #2 for use in .45Colt 850 - 1050 fps loads, .357 magnum 1200 fps loads and then 500 grain bullets for the 45-70 Sharps.

Had a bunch of that like I said fall into my lap and all that scrap lead roof flashing I need to smelt down for round balls.

Too much stuff and not enough time... :D :p

Thanks for the help.
