I've been handloading since I was old enough to start deer hunting, which was 12 at the time. However, I stopped at about 20 which was 16 years ago. I became real serious about it at 19 with my .22-250. I've since rebarreled with a Pac-Nor chambered in .22-250. Since I've started big game hunting again, I also want to handload for my 30-06 again.

I picked up a pound of Varget for the .22-250. My favorite primer was either the CCI 200 or 250 depending on the powder I was using. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to locate any CCI's locally. Local shops have had Federal 210M, Remington 9 1/2, and today the Sportsman's Warehouse had some Winchester LR's in stock. I ended up picking up a couple 1000 packs of the WLR primer. Is there any reason I should avoid working up a load with these? I have a friend who will gladly buy them from me if other primers are more desireable. What primers are preferred?

ETA - I plan on replacing my .22-50 dies with the Redding Competion 3-die set. The micrometer neck sizing and bullet seating die, along with the bump die (I think that's what the 3rd die is).

I do need to replace my Lyman Spar-T press with something much less flexy. The Forster Co-Ax has interested me since the case seems to align better with the dies, but I'm not sure if it's completely necessary if I'll be using the Redding Comp dies. Suggestions on a press? My setup will be in the house downstairs, so spent primer containment is very important.

WLRs work fine in my .22-250 with Varget :)

Your WLR primers will be fine, because you'll be working up anyway. It can be dangerous to swap primers with top loads, but starting with them is fine. Your top loads might not match the book exactly, so watch closely.

I think your Spar-T will be fine.

My experience with swapping primers in Highpower M1A has shown for me in.308 that Win large rifle primers will get me 50fps more than CCI with the same load. So there is a change by swapping primers. Not a big deal for me as my loads are not at max, but could change point of impact. If your loads are near max, then you need to work up again. Other than that, both are high quality.

Also can change the bullet's barrel time, moving you off a sweet spot if you have one in an established load. Since you are working up new loads, though, that isn't an issue. You'll be looking to find a sweet spot in the first place. Varget, like most stick powders, ignites easily enough that it works with all primers. Magnum primers may improve MV variance if it isn't filling your case well.
