Also have a line on a 500Sw for $798.
Considering I hope to handgun hunt I am kinda torn between the 50AE Desert eagle and the 500. I believe both will take any game i hope to hunt. Concerned re the 500 recoil and the functioning of the DE
Guidance?

Hmmm.... well the DE is pretty limited with load selection. Plus they're a big heavy gun - although not sure the Smith is much lighter, or smaller, if at all.
You would definitely have a lot more options for loads with the Smith, and the ability to work up and down to the level that suited you best.
Don't know what a DE costs, but for the money that the Smith would cost, I would just personally spring a few bucks more for a Freedom Arms in .454, .475/.480, or even the same .50 AE chambering. More versatility with the revolver and a lot lighter to pack a Freedom Arms than either of the first two choices.
Don't forget the Taurus big bores if you want a double action.
Super RedHawk too big and heavy for my taste as a purely hunting gun.
For what it's worth.....

Not sure what you're hunting but a used super blackhawk .44 mag for about $250 will probably kill what you need to kill, and if it won't you probably shouldn't be picking that fight with a handgun. Everything after that is gravy, not that gravy is a bad thing :D
Happy hunting.

The Desert Eagle is really a show gun, makes movie stars look good. Other then that they Jam. I have a S&W 500 and I am loading up 440g cast bullets (much bigger then the desert eagle can handle) and I am getting 1600+ fps which will take down anything in north america including a polar bear. Yes it does have kick but ya gotta love big lead! I am not in favor of any semi auto for hunting as a Revolver is much more accurate and you can really tune a load for it.
The Taurus in .480 is my favorite. I load up 412g cast and that too will take anything down you can hunt. Of course for the long range (150+ yards) I suggest my BFR in .450 marlin but talk about kick! :D
Boy, Zeppie -
You're a real glutton for punishment!! :D
Remind me the next time you show up at the range so's I can move down a few benches, or so!!

A little off the subject, but what about the 500 s&w in a lever gun? 1894 marlin 500 s&w. Or in a Ruger #1, probably be pretty devastating.

I think you would loose some of the benefit if it was in a lever gun. A .454 would be a good choice but the S&W 500 would loose some of its charm. I have a 50 Beowulf on an AR15. You want a 50, you got a 50!
