Hello,
I am not only new to this forum but new to the idea of BPC. While I have personally been shooting and reloading smokeless cartridges and BP in muzzleloaders for many, many years, this BPC is totally new to me. My local Rod and Gun club has just recently started a BPC class of competitors but they don't know a whole lot about it either. My question is Where do we start? Most of the guys are using old military guns and modern "smokeless" guns but loaded with BP. A lot of their loads are just "hunt and peck" (so to speak) loads but I just don't feel comfortable starting out that way. Any and all advice would be appreciated please.

You can get a lot of BBC loading info at these sites.

The two sites listed by Redhawk are good ones...I don't dissagree with the information. Will point you to a few things that you should pay attention to:
1. Bullet alloy. After you get the rifles shooting well, can experiment with differnt types of alloy, but try a pure tin/lead mix (1:20 tin:lead) is a good place to start.
2. Bullet lube. It does make a difference....buy/use bullet lube specifically promoted for BP use (and it has to be a bit thicker than the lubes used in muzzle loaders).
3. Powder compression...are two ideas here: one uses a long drop tube to pre-compress the power at case charging. The second is the idea of using a compression die before bullet seating. I'm a drop tube believer.
4. Bullet base wads. Can ignore this is you intend using gas check bullets. Not always needed, but can make a big difference in specific loads.

I suggest the series by Paul Matthews and published by Wolfe Publishing. Excellent books. There is also a book by Mike Venturino at the SPG site. Excellent all.

Another place to check out is www.reloadernest.com. I have a .50 3 1/4" Sharps and love desintigrating woodchucks with it. Lyman puts out a good book and I also got a lot of my info from Cartriges of the World.
