Hi. I am new here, but I need to know if anyone has ever heard of a prototye Savage 99 that was made into a slide action rifle? My great-grandfather told me that an engineer from Savage Arms made such a thing and there was only one made. Does anyone have any info. concerning this??

I don't know but that would be a sought after item. I love my 70 ventage Rem 760. I saw several on the History channel last night on the Border Patrol feature, that is the savage. My buddy has one in good condition in .308.

Didn't Bill Ruger alter a model 99 many years ago into a pump? Either that or a semi-auto. I remember seeing pictures of it once.
The Slide Action Savage Was not a One Off you can get parts for them.....http://www.savageparts.com/PDF/center_fire_rifles/slide_action/170_26.pdf
Truthfully, Remington built a lever operated slide action prototype. Called the XC-7. Photos of it in Eugene Myszkowski's book titled, Remington Autoloading & Pump-Action Rifles. Ugly as sin!

sos2: The Savage parts you refer to are for a Pump carbine that they made for several years during the '70's. A neat little thing chambered in 30-30 or 35Rem. It was quick to handle but it rattled like crazy. We had them on the rack at the store ,off and on, while I was there ,but I never sold one.It was not designed anything like the Mod99.

The centerfire pump action rifle you refer to is the Savage model 170. It was made from 1970 to 1981. It had a 22" barrel with a 3 round tubular magazine under it. The 170 was chambered in .30-30 Win. and 35 Rem. Depending on condition they are worth anywhere from 100 to 200 dollars.
As you can see this was no prototype as they were in production for 11 years. The Savage model 99 is a lever action rifle that saw continuous production for almost 100 years. The model 99 is a very sought after model, both by hunters and by collectors. Depending on the exact model, caliber and condition they bring prices from around $100 (in poor condition) to over $3,000 for a rare edition in NEB shape.

Does anyone know if you can use pointed bullets in the Savage 170 Pump action? I know some old pump actions had special spiral tubes to hold pointed bullets.

As I remember the Sav 170 was a tubular mag. there fore suitable for Fn/Rn ammo, just as the Win. 94 & Marlin 336. Yes some of the old Remingtons had spiral tubes, but since the factory ammo all had RN's I can't imagine why any one would assume they were safe for spitzers. Oh well, I dont believe the Sav 170 had a spiral tube mag. Take a look. Pepe Ray
