Tell me what you mean by: good knives for the natives[brand and price range etc.? Also, in the pic you were wearing camo, is this advisable in Africa today?

After the hunt is over, some sort of a tip is expected by the guide and the trackers and skinners. This, of course depends on how you felt the hunt went. Most of the time the trackers and skinners use their knifes under demanding conditions. They wear out fast. They might perfer if you gave them some replacement knifes instead of money. Nothing too expensive, not a CASE or anything like that, but a nice knife with a good blade that is strong enough to handle butching a very large animal.

As to camo, when you are out in the bush, you need all the help you can get to not be seen. You are out in the middle of nowhere. I don't see any problem wearing camo and no one suggested anything else. Why do you ask this question?

15years ago,in Zimbabwe,South Africaand South-West Africa/Namibia,it was verboten to wear camo as camo is the standard uniform of terrorists and the security forces.

Interesting. Before the trip I asked my PH what to wear and he suggested the type of camo. I asked other questions, like is orange worn, as is here in the U.S. He said no. Looking at pictures of past clients of his, they were wearing camo as well. I have been through S.A., Botswana, and Zimbabwe, and save for Zimbabwe, the political climate seems calm in Southern Africa. I quess the camo rule has now been dropped.

Hi
I beleive that the restrictions on Camo were to prevent impersonation of police officers, as, at that time, they were the only wearers of camo - our military outfits were brown.

Even during these restrictions there was still legal camo that could be worn - the type that Density was wearing would have been fine.

Our military now uses camo outfits, but I am not aware of any restrictions. I have seen no commercially available camo that approximates the patterns/colours of the militayr stuff anyway.

Use of Orange/Red camo is not advised in our bush - too many monkeys/baboons and birds that can see colours just fine, and can blow your cover by alerting the game. Most of our hunting, especially if you pay-hunting occurs on private land where you will be the only hunter present (other than your pro) - do not really need to worry about getting shot by anyone.

Only place I might advise "Bright" camo is in Grassland areas, especially in the mountains (e.g. Drakensberg). If you had a fall, or sprained an ankle etc, while separated from your guide, then you would be more visble. Ranges are longer too - i.e. you are not stalking right up to game for a clear shot.
Cheers
