Returned home from moose camp late last night. It was an awesome hunt, saw about all that Idaho has to offer in the way of game, and the scenery was spectacular as the fall display of color is at about its climax.

Moose were in the rut, and called this one off a ridge about a quarter mile away. A nice tender peice of meat for the freezer. Killed him at 9:30 in the morning, and didn't get him packed down to the rig, and loaded up until six in the evening! It was a very long day, in the very best kind of way! Addicting hunting these critters, too bad it's once in a lifetime in Idaho!

Thought you'd like some photos.

God Bless,

Marshall

Hope you're hungry!

That hat looks familiar .... took my lucky Beartooth hat pig hunting last weekend and shot a small sow....

o.k. Marshall.
You just could'nt keep from teasing us, we understand.
No details, what load, range, bullets, you know the drill.
Those werent jacketed bullets were they?
Oh no, did I type that out loud?

Congrats on the moose, great job. Apparently moose calling can be a quick learning situation unlike those dogged turkey mouth calls.

More when I have time, but quickly, the gun of course was .444 Marlin, the short Outfitter model, BTB 290g LFNGC .432"/53.0g H322/WLPP/Rem Brass.

Bullet had an annealled nose, and was sighted in 3" high at 100 yards. Moose hit high, just behind shoulder joint, broke the spine at about 220 yards. At the shot, using my scout scope, and shooting with both eyes open, all I saw when I pulled the trigger were hooves in the air above the rocks before he fell out of sight! Slammed him AWFULLY hard.

Still had some life to him when I got to him, and popped him behind the ear with my .44 SBH. Moose down, the work began!

More info and more photos in a couple of days!

Thanks for the inquiries gentlemen, and we'll be poking around on the forums intermittently for the next week or so, at least until I catch up a little on what's hanging fire.

God Bless,

Marshall

Outstanding Marshall! Lots of fine meals to come with that size of a moose. A downhill pack to the truck? That's just not right. The moose is always supposed to fall in neck deep water, where there is no wind to keep the bugs off you, on the wrong side of the river, at the bottom of a mountain that sits between you and your only way out! :D

Indeed, it was an outstanding experience! Can't convey on the forums how wonderful it was to get away, and to partake of such a special time in the Idaho high country. I'll have more info for you folks and a whole passle of photos to come. But for now am attending to work at hand.

Spent ALL day Thursday, and eleven hours Friday cutting and wrapping moose meat! Quite a job once that big critter gets home to be honored guest at dinner. I kind of think he moved in for a pretty lengthy stay!

Thanks to all!

God Bless,

Marshall

Great looking animal! Once you are drawn you can't apply for moose again in Idaho?

Dave,

It's a one-shot deal! (pun intended)

However, if there are ever any moose tags left over after drawings, you can buy them over the counter on a first come first served basis. (Fat chance there will EVER be any of them left over!)

It was an awesome experience. Just whetted the appetite for moose hunting.... will just have to either go needle some of our fine customers in Alaska or go to BC to hunt moose... it's addicting stuff!

God Bless,

Marshall
