Huge moose killed on the Alaska Peninsula. Reports vary from 81 to 87". Big sure enough.

I "borrowed" this pic from another website.

Yep - that's a big moose! 'Course, I understand you folks up north grow them pretty good size to start with. Sure beats the one I took back in '68 up in Ontario. From what I gather, anything over 60 or so inches is considered a nice trophy. What do you suppose this rascal weighed on the hoof, Alyeska??

I would bet after you carried all the meat out first, you'd be cussing that huge rack for the last load!

That is one HUGE rack.

I don't know, it is illegal to recover the antlers before recovering all the meat. Moose that size would take take several trips to pack out the meat. I would bet the antlers were cached in a very, very safe place away from bears, rodents, etc... before the meat was packed out though.

Not being familiar with or having any relationship with moose (milk cows are more my speed), my first thought was, "How did they keep their rear feet on the ground?" You'd think that guy had to walk around with his butt up in the air?

Trust me DOK, when packing out one of the big rascals, you become painfully aware they have enough weight and bottom to keep their feet planted firmly on the ground. Oh my aching back, legs, knees, calves, shoulders, feet, ankles, etc.. so on and so forth! :D

That mooses antlers are at Knights in Anchorage,AK. My buddies wife works there. It is a true 81". What a whopper. Shot by a guy from TX. My buddy could fit his whole arm into the fold in the antler. With room to spare. He is not a small guy. So this one is not an inflated Alaskan 12' bear story we have seen be before by non res poacher. Alyeska is right. Fall face first with a moose quarter on your back and it's a hummbling event.

I have been in on packing out moose and caribou (none as large as the one above), I just wonder how they flew those antlers out with the small airplane pictured behind the hunter.

Suppose they tied them onto the wing struts?

Here's another one we're waiting for more information on, but wanted to pass on what we do have, which is just a picture of what is obviously a seriously big Alaska-Yukon moose. We're told the greatest spread is 80-3/8 inches. Its too early for the 60-day drying period, so we have not seen an entry on this bull yet, but we'll keep you posted.

Update: This bull was taken by Mark Rose on 9/13/03, near Rapid on the Alaska Peninsula. The official entry score is 247-7/8 which ranks #15 All-time. The bull with the greatest spread in the records book is 81-4/8.
