Hey guys, just wandering if anyone had done any coon hunting without the use of dogs. I go out to my folks farm once in a while and just see if I run into anything. Is there any way to attract the coons towards me? I think all I do is walk around and scare them off. What is a real good bait to use. Any help or advise would be great. I dont want to use dogs or traps. Thanks- RHW-OYF.  :)

I shoot those varmints any chance I can on the farm. I've also used a steel cage trap. The bait that has worked everytime for me is: peanut butter. If you want to be cruel (I wouldn't do this) place anti-freeze in a bowl where they wonder around. I hate those bandits!

Set up a feeding station - and indeed, P-Nut butter is a good lure. Try a varmint call in the daytime from a blind - anything that responds is good to shoot! ;)

GOOD LUCK!

Coons are opertunists, free food is the best, I use to bait them with dinner scrapes. I shot this huge coon early bow season, I had to shoot him with my left hand, due to my right hand had my arrow release on it,used a Ruger Mark II 22LR. shot was 20 yards from my blind. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

Coons love sardines. I've caught a coon in a cage trap using them. We've had coons get into a tub of barbecue sauce while on a camping trip once so you may wanna try that. You can get racoon calls from anywhere that sells any varmint calls. (And no I'm not making that up. Shoot. I've even seen a pigeon call in a catalog. No joke.) You can get mouth blown or recorded tape calls. They'll tear up a deer feeder full of corn too.

Good luck. I hope you get a mess of them!

Just remembered - you can use bacon drippings as a lure too. 'Course, it's gonna' draw all kindsa' critters to your blind. Maybe smear it up in a tree at about head height, so most animals won't track it to its source. The scent carries a long ways.

GOOD LUCK!

Never hunted them using bait, but those little beggers have dug into and upset every garbage can we ever had....maybe that's all it takes for bait?

I'll echo the peanut butter trick. Smear it into bark as mentioned and you'll attract all kinds of critters. If you have a Johnny Stewie type caller you can get a tape that sounds like a coon kitten in distress. This will bring them to you, but quick from what I've heard. One friend told me if you do it at nite you better use a shotgun and bring a friend to go back-to-back. Not tried that but it sounded good to me.

Those of you that would rather eradicate than hunt should go to a farm store and ask for Blue Streak or Fly Bait. Mix it in with a bowl of pepsi. Next morning you'll have them stacked up near the bowl...close! However, it is dangerous to use around kids and pets so be advised. Bullets are more selective.

Hey Rambo, good to see you here you pig shooter! Happy hunting this winter.

Perferator your right, I love boar hunting and many other big game animals, but there is nothing like a charging boar to get your heart beating hard and the hair on the back of your neck stand up ;) good hunting. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

Talking about the fur, anyone know how I should take care of the pelt of a raccoon or fox? can I cure it like a deer skin with alum sulfate and salt? or is there a better way? any help would be great!

Coons are primarily nocturnal, you'll do much better if you hunt them at night. Where it is legal, you can use a light.
We have about 200 acres of pecan bottom. When the pecans are ready, the coons attack them. If you can catch them in the trees at night, you can have a field day shooting them.

I think if coons were people, they would be the first ones at the "welfare office". They've learned how to work the system, and definitly know how to destroy a new deer feeder. and live off of what was intended for the other animals. They are very crafty!

Hah! That's a hoot. We shoot coon on sight in this area. They have all but over run us and will eat anything edible and try most things that aren't. We shoot them. One neighbor some years ago trapped out over 200 after they destroyed his hard earned sweet corn field the day he was going to harvest. About 6mos later he heard the animal control officer would trap the coon in town and drop them off up the road from us. :D

I hunt them next to the creeks in the daylight. They are the big lumps up in the cedar trees.

A friend of mine has a video he made that showed five coons that were standing on each other on one of the legs of his feeder. The top one would spin the wheel until there was enough corn on the ground, then they would all get down and feast.

They have pulled out the electric wiring and destroyed my soler panels on 9 feeders. I hate coons!

Come spring, I'm taking revenge!!!

Hmmmm. I'm putting out a feeder this spring for my buddy on our hunting spot. Now I'm wondering if we should ditch the electronic and come up with something else. But then again, it's a good reason to go shinin' for coon. Here in michigan if they "predate" or about to, and/or about to damage property you can TAKE THEM OUT.

They are indeed entertaining if not a complete nuisance :D

One of the guys over here offered that he uses a large diameter PVC pipe slanted down into the ground with an opened tin of sardines at the bottom. He said he greases & sprays the insides of the pipe with cooking spray. Coon goes in & doesn't come back out. He shoots'em with a .22 and then drops a hook to pull'em out.

I like huntin' COONS with dogs @ night, but this (greased pipe) is definitely one way to get'em if they're causing problems.

EASY PEASY!

Just a guess, but probably some of that stuff used for water supply pipelines or sanitary sewers was what he was talkin' about. It must be at least 12" or 14" diameter....

I bet you could use a plastic barrel too or BIG plastic trashcan - if one isn't long enough, use two joined end to end.

GOOD LUCK!

Oh man are racoons pests. I live in a quiet suburban neighborhood. Those racoons tear up my garbage almost every week. I'd hunt them but I don't think my neighbors would appreciate a teenager running around the neighborhood with a gun in my hands (maybe in Texas but not here). Speaking of neighbors, a whole racoon family of coons lived in my next door neighbor's attic!. It clawed away the side of their house from a near-by tree branch! The houses here are not cheap either. Plus, we put a brick on our garbage can. The coons take the brick off, open up the can, eat whatever it finds, then puts the lid back on! Talk about cleverness....

Try using a live trap, Its a cage, door falls behind once the critter in in the cage or something like that, works well for the most part, and the neighbors won't be calling the cops on you;) discharging a firearm within city limits, out in the sticks you can fire away, as long as you are acting ethical and safe while doing so. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

If you like to hunt and shoot there is one option but it may not be within the law. Check on airgun laws for the .177cal.
For years I used a lowly gamo 220 w/scope. That thing was the ultimate in urban/suburban sniping. I've taken several coon with it. It's the break-barrel type of action. The barrel cracks open and you cock it by pulling down on the barrel and putting in a single pellet. Extremely accurate, quiet and powerful. One shot is all you need.

Eh, this was a few months ago when the coon problem was bad. Now they have simply froze off. :P I have a daisy bb/pellet gun. It's not the best (like gamo and RWS) but I like to kill some plastic nazis with it in my crawlspace. If it gets bad again I'll probably put up traps. That worked well when they were a big problem...got about 5 of them. Thanks though!

Coons can also be called with predator calls at night. Use a wounded bird call and a red light.

set up down the driveway from an abondoned falling down farm site in the winter when the coons are holed up in the house. Many times the coons will be thicker than **** inside an old house like that. A place that the farmer or rancher is feeding cattle will have even more coons. Anyway, after you get set up in the spot with lots of coons start blowing the call or your electronic caller the coons will show up at the windows of the house looking around and will climb out and head down the driveway. They cannot see red to a red lense on your light will not scare them away.

Of course this will also work in tree groves and along rivers and such.
