I just bought a winchester mod 70 westerner in .243 for $300 with an old Tasco 3x9 scope. How do I tell if its a pre 64, and what does the westerner stand for. the gunis very clean.

The Pre 64 Model 70 has the long non-rotating claw extractor. After 64 they used one built into the bolt head until a few years ago, when the larger calibre guns, or at least some of them, went back to the claw type.

If you post the serial number with the last three didgits replaced with "XXX", for sercurity, someone will know the year. Sounds like a good deal to me, although some Tascos were quite good and other models were junk.

A Winchester Model 70 in decent shape is a pretty good price for $300, I would think. Not sure if the scope is worth anything. Sounds like you did OK even if it's not a pre-64.
