My 13 year old son is looking for his first whitetail this year. A friend of mine invited me to bring him over to his house on Thursday. He has a nice spot with a few tree stands set up and was pretty sure we would see some deer. I walked him to his stand and got him settled in, turned to walk a few feet away and spotted 2 does about 80 yards away. Well here in PA. this was junior and senior hunting days which meant anterless deer only, so we were in luck. I pointed out the deer to my son, and from his vantage point, pretty well camoflaged by surrounding trees, he couldn't see the does. So I helped him out of the stand again and we walked to a tree with a better vantage of these does. The funny thing was we had just walked by the spot, where these does appeared, on our way to his stand. Well like all 13 year olds he got his wind up seeing these deer and we ended up spooking them before he could get a shot. WQe did get to see 6 other deer that day, but they were all about 250 yards away, and I don't feel my son has enough experience, or gun to take them at that range. On our way home we spotted 2 deer in the field right next to our property, of course the time to end hunting was past by about 10 minutes. Well his search goes on and I'm looking forward to his first deer as much as he is, if not more.

Hang in there, Pa - he'll get one yet and make you proud! :D

Are you guys hunting with a rifle or shotgun? Rifle I hope. Your frustrated neighbors in Ohio are not permitted the use of a rifle. Many deer live from season to season because they are out of shotgun range. I hate when that happens. Have a safe and fun season.

I'm doing my best to get him the opportunity he needs. I'm afraid if he doesn't get one he'll get discouraged and I don't want that.

We're using rifles. We have neighbors on each side that are stuck with shotguns, both Ohio and N.J., I hope that doesn't happen to us. They keep developing the land around here and it may come to pass. Good hunting and sneak in close.
