I am contemplating the purchase of a new big game rifle. Main use will be for antelope and deer, with an occasional elk, If I get lucky to draw, in the southwest. Hunting conditions will vary from mountain hunting, to clear shots up to around 300 yds, I wont take a shot farther than that. I plan on this rifle being my main hunting tool for years to come. I really like the LH Kimber m8400 in 300WSM, and also like the ruger #1A light sporter in 30-06. I appreciate any opinions.

chupiw,
If you placed both of these guns side by side and asked me to pick one to be my go-to gun for the animals stated.........Ruger in 30-06 would be my choice with no hesitation on my part...!

i think the 30-06 would be a better choice. im sure both would be equally good as an all around choice as far as balistics(im sure the 300 would be better for bigger game) but the 06 would give u a greater choice on ammo. having never shot a 300wsm i would guess the 30-06 would be more comfortable to shoot. if you reload might as well go with the 300. there are plenty of choices of 30 cal bullets to reload.
i dont know that much about the 300wsm someone who does might could help u more than i can.

Don't see how you could go wrong with either. Pick the rifle that fits you best....

.30-06, although a kimber m84 in .308 would be a very nice 300-yard rifle.

The 06 if your a handloader, and if your are not the 06 anyway, if you go for the 300wsm then you can't afford not to be a handloader. The 30-06 has been around the globe a few times, and as such with in your set parameters, 300 yds you could do with less of a cartridge if you wanted but within the 300 you would never want for more gun than the 06. The man with one gun and knowing how to use that gun is a man that is hard to beat. Take care and have fun. Swany
