View Full Version : Cure for my sore wrist when shooting the 44 magnum...
FYI: Just wanted to pass this along for anyone who gets a sore wrist after firing the 44 magnum handgun. I'm small framed in the hand/wrist department and was always experiencing a sore wrist after firing my 44. So I bought a heavy duty wrist wrap (Keys Fitness brand). It's wide, wraps tight and is secured with velcro. Couldn't believe how much it helps with support. Hopefully this will help others.

That's a helpful idea. Of course, now the major stress is transferred to the elbow and shoulder.....
AJ,
what kind of .44 revolver and loads are you firing that it causes wrist pain? I'm curious because it could be as much in the technique as it is in the actual recoil.
kciH,
It's not pain, but the feeling of soreness in my right wrist only. I'm using a S&W Model 629 Classic with Hornady 240 grain (for deer). The best comparision I can think of is if you use a hammer all day...the next day your wrist is sore.
I was curious because I see a lot of guys try to hold a .44 down like they are rapid firing a .38 snub. I've had best results accuracy-wise when I give big bore revolvers a softer grip and let them recoil, as opposed to trying to hold them down which is impossible. If I fire 200 light .38's in a snub, rapid fire it gives me sore wrist because of the snap. If I put 200 rounds through a .44 I don't have pain in my wrist at all.

kciH,
Took me awhile to understand your post. But, I finally got it. I've got an extra wrist band if you feel the need! ;)

Buy a S&W 500, load up some hot 440g lead and shoot 10 shots. Then when you shoot your .44 the pain will not come from shooting the .44
thus endith the lesson

A curtain grip and stance can solve the problem, I use a push/pull grip method using big bore revolvers like 44 mag/454 Casull, both hands griping the revolver, medium grip, anchoring my left elbow to my chest, left thumb over the right thumb, knees slightly bent left foot forward pointing where your shooting ,left foot back and angling to the right. this seems to be very accurate and cuts down felt recoil as well. reminder you don't want a soft grip, you might end up with a spur in your head using heavy recoiling revolvers. Also some good grips are warrented at times to cut recoil down, a hard grip can be hard on the hands and wrist as well, I personally like the Hogue's Monogrips. Hope this helps. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

Rmouleart,
That is a good handgun shooter stance. I use to shot like that, but had to change my stance to see the sights clearer. My 44 is not scoped either, and it's a S&W 629. I have two Ruger handguns and have been curious as to the difference between the Smith and Ruger styles regarding recoil. Have really been tempted to get the SBH. Thanks for the picture. You can keep the snow!
