I looking at purchasing a 30-06 for deer hunting, I am wondering if there is such a thing as a semi-auto that can be had for under $400. New or used, I guess it doen't really matter as long as it is a reliable weapon.
I know for my budget, I am not going to get a top of the line weapon, but keep in mind, I will only be using it one week out of the year.
Any suggestions, comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Well, you're best case scenario would be to find a nice used Browning BAR for under 400, but of course that's unlikely.
Remington 7400s can be had for right at 400 usually, but I've never heard really glowing things about them. They supposedly have alot of problems, and are far inferior to the BAR. But the price is right for what you're looking for.
One other intriguing option is the Izmash Saiga. It has an AK style action, but they've just started making it in .30-06. I'm not sure what the 06 model will run, but their .308 and 7.62x39 models have run 200-250 usually. I have not heard on way or the other if they are reliable or accuarate. I would imagine with the AK action, they are reliable. Of course, AKs also tend to be so-so on accuracy.

Remington 742s and 7400s are you best bet for the price range. My dad has killed a truckload of deer with several of them. Some shot great, some were a little quirky as far as grouping, but all of them shot well enough for 200+ yard shots at whitetails. They just aren't as easy to work up handloads for as a bolt gun, that's all.
Main thing with a semi-auto is to make sure that it fires the first shot from a cold barrel the same every time, don't get too hung on up groups unless it is just awful. Also don't get carried away handloading for them.
If you buy a used one and don't like it, you can probably sell it for about what you paid for it. So I think that's a reasonable gamble.
I just helped my father sight in his Remington 742, predecessor to the 7400, in 30-06 when I was back home last month. I would say it easily shoots well enough to kill deer at 300 yards if you're a decent shot. These guns are not too fancy, but they function well if maintained. I think much of the bad rap they get is from folks who can't seem to understand that a rusty, pitted chamber will play heck with function of a semi-auto rifle. If you look at used make sure to check that chamber for rust or pitting! It WILL cause you problems.

I own twin remington 742's in the 308 and 30/06. They both are fine shooters but not as tightly grouped as my bolt actions but needless to say I would not hesitate any shots at 2-300 yards with either. All depends on what type of area you hunt in. Where I hunt we normally do not have an opportunity at any shots over 100 yards so my guns are always sighted in for roughy 50 yards. Lots of apple orchards here and thick woods. Good luck, I'm sure if you get the 742 you will be pleased.

Thank you all for your help!
I have a friend that might be willing to sell me a Remington semi auto, I am assuming it is a 7400, if the price is right. When I find out more I am sure I will have some more questions, but until then Thanks again.

I have a 7400 .270 in matte/synth that is essentially new. I want a 308 bolt action. Want to buy it?
