I just bought my first revolver at a gun show. its a ruger Super Blackhawk 44 mag, stainless with 10.5" barrel, its twenty years old and it had home made grips. I put a hogue grip on it. I love it , I can shoot it all day. anyone else have a comment on one of these big horses?

Good revolver and tough as nails. The 10.5" barrel adds good velocity gains, especially if you handload, but does make for a somewhat cumbersome holster gun.

Personally I dislike the Hogue grips on a Ruger single action, but I've not tried them on as long a pistol as you have. My experience is that they increase pereived recoil on shorter handguns as a result of raising the bore axis further above the shooting hand. If you like it you don't need to worry about my thoughts. If it works for you, use it!. You'd never get my Hogues away from me on a S&W double action though.

Great gun lusted for one since I was Paper boy age . That was 1973 and They retailed for a little over $100.00 . Never did aquire one until New Years day 2000 . Paid $270.00 used for 7.5" stainless Minty Fresh. Most big bores you come across used are in great shape (let the other guy pay retail and wait till they trade it in when it's more than they can handle ha,ha!) . The only thing that I noticed and have heard from others is the rear sight blade is usually to tall as from factory for loads w/heavier bullets than 240 at factory velocity. Mine would print 6-8" high @ 25yds. you can speed them up by handloading or you can get a shorter rear sight insert from Ruger.

That's a fine revolver, no doubt. If you take even a little care with this pistol, it will last you forever. I still have and shoot the old three-screw SuperB I bought 31 years ago, and it is still going strong. Enjoy your pistol, I'm sure it won't be your last big bore handgun. They tend to be a little addicting, or at least they are to me. If you find the longer barrel to be a bit much to carry, there are a lot of people (SSK comes to mind) that can lop of 3 or 4 inches to make it more carry friendly. However, my FA .454 has a 10" bbl and while it is not hip gun, it rides very well in a shoulder rig while hunting. The worst part about the Ruger SuperB, if you miss, don't blame the gun. Nobody who knows the gun is going to buy that story ;)

Thanks for the input. I have been having a blast handloading for my SBH and since i bought this pistol my autos have started to collect dust. I also love the 10.5 inch barrel. it rides pretty well on the hip for me, but gives a guy a hard time sitting down in vehicle. ( its so long that you just have to take it off before you get in)

Your enthusiasm brings back memories. I bought my first Super Blackhawk in 1965, at the same time I bought a new Chevy. I did not reload and had never shot anything more than a .22 revolver. I took both (car and gun) to my folk's cabin on the Mississippi and put the target out there a ways and rested the SBH on the top of the new car. The barrel went up and the butt went down and put a very nice dent in my new car. Most enjoyable dent I ever put in a car.....but did learn to use a better rest.
