what do you think would be the best round to use for self defence for my kahr pm9(9mm)?
My 9mm Walther P99 is very accurate using Winchester 115 grain SILVERTIP HP. The silver bullet is also nice if one comes across any werewolves. :D Seriously, most brand name ammo makers will indicate on the box "FOR PERSONAL PROTECTION." Try different brands and see which one your gun likes and you shoot the most accurate.

One quick note to consider, alot of people will run hundreds of cheaper practice loads through their guns then buy a box of 20 premium self defense loads, load up the magazines and proceed to carry or store the gun for protection use. Keep in mind this is not the time to find out that your choice of protection ammo for some reason dosen't cycle (or some other problem) in your particular gun. As expensive as It may seem at the time , You should get through at least a couple hundred defense rounds with out any malfunctions before your confident with such rounds for defense use.

There are a couple schools of thought on handgun ammo:
One is to get the biggest, baddest, most powerful ammo possible and use it.
The other approach is to balance Ballistic Effectiveness (kill the bad guy) with Personal Liability Protection (don't over-penetrate through the Bad Guy and through the wall into the innocent bystander who's surviving relatives will sue the **** out of you).
I like the 2nd approach best, and as a CCW permit holder in 4 key states that (via CCW reciprocity) give me the ability to legally carry in 37 of the 50 states, I personally think you would be wise to use a hollow-point that will expand upon impact and "do the job" without over-penetrating.
There are a number of high quality rounds out there worth considering. Among them: PMC Gold Dot, Federal Hydra-Shok and others of similar quality.
Good Luck !!

what do you think would be the best round to use for self defence for my kahr pm9(9mm)?
My personal favorite was recently discontinued: Federal's 124-grain Nyclad HP. If you can find some in your area, I strongly suggest trying them. My second choice would be whatever 115-grain +P JHP shoots best in your Kahr. Not just accuracy but also with 100% reliability. Don't get caught up in the advertising wars. The differences in the bullets themselves are minor. Focus on complete reliability.

The best self defense ammo for a 9mm is a .44 or a .45. Neither will fit the 9mm so you will have to sell the gun and buy some real protection.
Sorry, I have just seen too many instances where a 9mm fails to stop the bad guy in his tracks. :(

Glock? Glock? We Dont Need No Stinkin Glocks! ;)
Zeppy,
Don't forget that you CAN get a Glock in 10mm and .45, no matter how unrefined the weapon may be.

I offer this only to help out, not to flame, but Hydro shok and silvertip are really not that good. From my reading at www.tacticalforums, they are outdated rounds that have been supplanted by much better rounds.
The Ranger round mentioned by 147 Grain is an excellent defensive round which I also carry, as does my former dept., the largest Sheriffs Dept. in the country.
I would recommend going to tacticalforums.com. Once there, go to the Terminal Effects forum. Dr. Gary Roberts, a nationally recognized ballistics experts who has done thousands of tests for le and the military (he is a Lt. Commander in the Navy) has listed recent results of le testing of various rounds and calibers. You can also do a search for "service pistol calibers" for an earlier testing he did about the same.
Dr. Roberts goal is to determine which round is good enough to protect leo and military personnel; he is not doing this for the dollar.
If some members wish to continue using silvertips and hydroshok as a defensive round, fine. I wish you luck, but I will stick with an excellent one for my own protection. Good luck.

Gents,
I have found that the Federal 9BP standard hollowpoint to be generally the most accurate, although most defense grade hollow points really are acceptably.
I have also had real luck wiht Cor-bons, but really haven't used many, as they are expensive.
If you want a bullet to hold together a little better, then go to the 124s, either a speer, federal, or win sxt.
Good shooting, fellows.
