View Full Version : Non-Concentric Brass

After going through a hundred or so .30-30 cases and checking them for concentricity, I found that fully 1/3 were to some degree out of round.

As up here we have a good supply of free, once fired brass (.30-30's still very popular in the northeast), I don't mind tossing the ones that don't make the grade; I do hate to part with other brass, such as .338 Win Mag.

Is there anything to correct the out of round cases?

Thanks for your help.

Are these cases out of round after resizing them? Is it the case body or just the case neck that is out of round?

After full resizing, I place the brass in a chuck and turn them- seting aside the ones with a pronounce wobble in the neck.

Can get out of round and out of square...the base can get angled if the breech face/barrel aren't in line. In the average 30-30 would probably have a hrad time noticing the giddrecne ny the groups shot with iron sights, but for any other use, may want to sort them.

Can have a poorly made die do the same thing (or a sprung press).

Actually...if you resize it and shoot it in a round/square chamber, it should come out round. May be a little stressed if it was way-out of round, but fire forming will make it inbto whatever the chamber it was shot in was.

Do you place the rim or the neck in the chuck?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but the average case of runout, unless it's extreme, is not too visible. If you've got the budget for it, the RCBS Casemaster, or a similar tool, would be a great way for you to determine where you problem comes from if you have one.
