HI guys,

I am in need of some perspective. While I have burnt almost endless amounts of H-110, I have burnt less than 1/4 lb of H-4227 (and that was in a recent 357 project). I am looking to develop a 1200-1300 fps load for my 5.5" Redhawk in 45 Colt. The plan is to use H-4227 in Starline brass and Federal primers. I will be using the Beartooth .452 310gr WLNGC bullet.

Do any of you have specific experience with this sort of load? How about general experience with H-4227 and the 45 Colt? If you posess a good understanding of H-4227, I will be able to best understand your answer if you compare it to H-110/296.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Bill

4227 has a hard time burning clean. Accuracy is often excellent, jut that a good bit of powder grains litter the bore (and sometimes in the action). A tight case neck/bullet grip helps but doesn't eleminate the unburned powder.

Use a lot of it in .22hornet...use a good bit of it in .45Colt carbine loads (less unburned powder than in revovler loads) and will use it with cast bullets in handguns, but it really isn't economical....about 1/2 the weight of Unique (or AA#5) gets the same speed, and as powder prices are about equal, using 4227 costs about twice as much.

Economics aside, 4227 can be very accurate and has worked well with heavy cast bullet loads in the 45colt. Giess the good news is that it works a lot better in the 45colt than it did for me in the .357mag.

Thanks for your input Ribbonstone!

ON my 357 project I was highly amazed how much unburnt powder came out of my 4" bbl. It never gave me what I wanted so I went on to something else but that's where I go the idea to try it on my 45 Colt. I am hoping for better results out of the 45 Colt.

Thanks again......... Bill

If you were using 200 grain bullets in the .357 it's highly unlikely you'll get a cleaner burn in the .45 Colt with 4227. You may have better luck in the .45 with WC680 which is 56 bucks a jug at www.gibrass.com. WC680 will definitely throw more consistent charges from a powder measure than 4227. I'd probably use magnum primers with the 680.
