What recommendations would you make for electronic hearing protection equipment?
Hello, Dennis - Welcome to the board.
I have several pair of electronic ear muffs - all work about to the same degree. Big difference is the power pac for them - some require the little "N" batteries that cost an arm and leg to replace. Try to find some that take the "AAA" or "AA" batteries.
The ear covers are a consideration, also. Some are fairly soft and will conform around the side of the head (even when wearing safety glasses - another must) and some will leave a little gap that allows the sounds in, anyway, or ride up on the head when cheeking the buttstock. I tend to wear a pair of soft plugs under the muffs for this reason.
I'm thinking seriously of buying the more expensive custom molded plugs to do away with the irritating problem of the inteference issue with the gunstock.

Want to support what Kdub says re power pack and with doubling up the ear protection. I went to my Audiologist for electronic ear protection then bought what he recommended. Despite spending a lot of money I still experienced hearing loss. I double up like Kdub says and this helps. You know even with doubling up my Tinnitus is worse after a match. Another thing I am sure of is that it can be helpful to get form fit ear protection and have it redone about every year. Guys used to come around to matches and do it for a cost of about $50 or so. It is worth the money. A friend of mine did give me some ear plugs to wear under my muffs and they were pretty good too. Think I will ask him about this and post it. Right now I forget the name for them, bottom line is not all ear plugs are equal. One of the nice things about electronic is that it is easier to hear range commands. Fred

Pro-ears are the best that I have tried. Better than Peltor, Dillon and another I can't remember. Better shut down time (it actually compresses the loud noise) and no lapse in coming up. They are comfortable to wear, but use the N battery. I have used them indoor for several hours at a time, being a Range Officer in matches over several (4) years. Best I have seen.
