I have a srh 44 mag 9 1/2 that I attempted to mount a bushnell elite3200 on just before deer season. The problem I am having is I can't get the scope rings(factory mounts that came with the gun) tight enough. The scope walks forward with every shot intil the turret hits the front ring. I looked at my scoped rifles and noticed there is a gap between the upper and lower ring halves. On my srh there is no gap, almost like the rings are slightly oversized. Has any one ever run into this? Should I work down the mating surfaces of the rings or go to a new after market set. This is really aggravating, my new scope is marred up and I didn't get to use my srh for hunting this year.

Hi,

A couple of thoughts. First, can you just leave it with the turrent against the ring? Solves all problems....

If that won't work, then carefully clean the scope tube and inside of the ring with alcohol, then put a dab of Scotch-Kote on the inside of the lower rings before you put the scope in. The stuff should be available in any hardware or electrical supply store, it's used to insulate wires. Kind of thick and sticky. There will be one brand or another that should work.

Back years ago, some scope ring sets would come with paper strips to be added to the inside of the rings to help bush and grip the scope tube. You can still cut some strips from business card type paper (plain only, no raised lettering) to do the same.

As Mike G suggested, you can use Scotch-Kote, or even rubber cement for this purpose.

I've always been leery of leaving the tube turret assembly wedged up against the scope rings. Never heard of this causing scope failure, just doesn't sound like it would be a good practice and may possibly damage the internals.

If you still feel this might be a problem, Leupold and a couple other scope mount mfg'rs have rings made for the Ruger integral mount that you could get to replace the current factory ones.

Send your rings back to Ruger they will send you a new set . Be sure to tell them your problem so they will be sure to check the ones they send you will be to specs. I wouldn't spend any more money if you don't have to Rugers rings are usually good performers.

A guy wrote this problem up in his review of the SRH .454 on militaryoptics.com.
The rings screwed all the way down and did not "appear to grip the scope tightly". I dont recall him having a big slipping problem though. He sent the rings back and was sent a new set that appeared to have the same problem.
I recall seeing a 454 for sale on gunbroker.com that had a scope mounted on it. The scope was very scratched up from what appeared to be the same problem.
I have not had the problem on my 454 (knock wood) but I am confident that if you contacted Ruger, they will do everything they can to make things right.
The suggestions posted sound good, Im gonna file those in the memory banks.
Good luck to you and happy hunting.

Well, after responding to your post I went and inspected my 454 SRH and sure enough I have the same problem. I had to look carfully as there wasnt much room for it to creep forward, but it did. The bell on the rear was up against the rear sight and thats what stopped it.
I got some of the "friction tape" that burris includes in its ring sets and installed it in the rings after cleaning them with alcohol.
I was wondering if the scratches on your scope were even, all the way around the scope tube. My scratches were only on 1/4 of the circumference of the tube.
This leads me to believe that the rings may have been a little misaligned when screwed into the recesses on the top strap. If this is the case it would explain why the scratches were not all the way around the tube and it would also explain the slipping, as the bearing surfaces were not evenly gripping the tube.
If your interested, Ill keep you posted on the results.
If this doesnt work I am going to permanantly mate the rings to the scope with some super wicked Loc-tite!
Thank god it was a cheaper scope (in my case)

One word will solve your problem: ScotchKote. (http://www.beartoothbullets.com/tips/archive_tips.htm/66)

Yes metal on to metal will move under heavy recoil, try plumbers tape on the inside of the rings,do not over lap, just cut a peace big enough to make one time around, works like a charm;) Aim small hit small. RAMbo.
