I'm curious as to your opinions regarding the most accurate 22 long rifle HV hunting ammo. My interest is for non edible varmint type critters like ground squirrels and jackrabbits. I often use a Browning T-bolt or Reminton 541 HB. So far the most consistantly accurate stuff I've found is the Winchester Power Point 40 HP's. Appreciate your thoughts on this subject...

I have an old Glenfield 25 (50.00 K-mart "cheapie when new) that is a absolute fifty yd. tack driver with the .79 cent a box type ammo , go figure. Probably hard to give an across the board answer for any particular gun thats out there?

If what you use is working for you, how can it be a bad choice? No way that all guns will shoot all brands of ammo the same way...and no way this year's lot numbers are going to have to match last years or next years. But will state the that better ammo (as in your coice of Power Points) does remain more constant than the bulk boxed ammo...is possible that the bulk box is the ammo that didn't make the standards set for the name-brand boxs, but still above reject catagory.
What's the best car? What brand of beer tastes the best?...each one has a answer that's right for you, but it isn't going to be right for me.

My Marlin 25 likes the Winchester 40gr HPs too. These happened to be one of the first types of .22 ammo that I tried for hunting and because they worked so well I haven't experimented with anything else!

For most of my guns, it is the Winchester Power Point hands down. It only gives up a very tiny bit of accuracy to the RWS subsonic HP, which is the most accurate .22 LR round I have ever shot out of most of my .22s, and there are 10 of them.

You just have to experiment. CCI Mini-Mag HPs for my guns.....

Try CCI Velocitor ammo. This is pricy, but if you want power AND accuracy, you have to pay for it. It is the most accurate ammo I can find for 3 different 22 LR rifles I own and use regularly.

This is one item I haven't tried and it's home town stuff no less. I'll pick up a couple boxes and see if my rifles like them as well. Thx for the input... Rickster

I did a little test this summer for the 10/22. The Velocitors won out. The slower the better in my single six.

just finished another test today with approx 75 different brands/types of 22 ammo. i have a Marlin mod 60 that is my total target shooter, i treat it very genteel, but i did not use this for testing. instead i used a rifle that i have been working on, and hacking up ,that i am going to sell to some lucky person who gets it, next weekend at the GRB GUN SHOW here in Houston. it is a mod 75 , i hacked, cut, and chopped up, painted everything, black on black on black, with rubber paint, enigne block paint and truck bedliner paint. Put a small bushy 3x9x32 scope on it , WW11 leather strap sling, and a harris bipod. even painted the scope a little bit , just to flatten it out a little. scope, even during the testing ,slides a bit, because i'm using some ultrahigh see through sites. shot it fast and furious tonight, from about 3.3o pm to 7 pm. tested all the ammo i put up on the bench. the results?
Almost identical to my known bench shooter, the preferred group of ammo is the Aguila. Oh yes it shoots a minimag here pretty good, and a red box fed and a red box am erican eagle ok. but if i want a whole group of high veolcity ammo to count on , with no fliers, no squibs or misfires, and can make it a one whole punch if i REALLY TRY? then i will pull out the Aguilas, and put in some work, yes the eleys were a tiny tad more accurate, particularly in the yellow box, but they are not high velocity , now are they?
so do you guys get similar results with ammo in the same mfgr guns but different ammo shoots better results with different mfgr guns?

Please consider this point more than your choice brand of ammo.Im sure you will find one that works well.

Interesting! A few years ago my group, SwampCrawlers, did the same type test on all of our rimfires.......10/22's, Marlins, Savage's, and Remington bolt guns.
It soon came clear that various rifles like various ammo! My glass bedded 10/22 loves CCI HP's.......While Little Hank's Marlin 60 likes Remington Gold.
We ended up using a 1" red dot sticker at 50 yards and tested our own rifle/ammo combo. Cissey's rifle is a slicked out lapped barrel little Savage with a black stock and Bushnell 2 3/4 to 5.........she can take a bushy tail's head off at 50 yards with Remington Sub-sonic HP...........?

Different .22 rifles often have different ammo preferences. Fortunately, my Remington Model 581 bolt action is not fussy. It will shoot well whatever is on sale at $.79 a box. There is a slight accuracy improvement with Winchester .22 Dyna-Points that are hybrid hollow points. All the best...

.22 LR headspaces on the rim. I have spent hours measuring the rim thickness on various kinds of ammo. The big difference in match ammo is typically quality control. The promotional stuff is cheap but the rims measure all over the place. I got a rim thickness measurement jig from Sinclair to do this. I use an old muffin tin that I have marked from .044 down to .0360. I measure them and the put them into the appropriate bin. Each size will print in a slightlydifferent place. Groups will range from tight to patterns depending upon the particular rifle. .042 works best in my altered 10/22. When I don't have the time or energy to measure, I buy either Remington subsonic or CCI MiniMag solids. I have found that the CCI hollow points are not as accurate in my rifles.

My old Springfield shoots just about any LR two 1/2" at 50 yrds! Some are better maybe 1/4" on a good day I really haven't found a round it don't shoot to atleast 1/2" at 50 yds! :)

Moontroll. Glad to hear someone else is as impressed with the CCI Velocitors. That little spear bullet is the best 22 game getter offered but the accuracy of the round is so impressive. I would sacrifice some accuracy for the bullet effect on game but not having to sacrifice makes the Velocitor a win-win. If you guys shoot any animals you owe it to yourself and the quarry to try the velocitor. You will be glad you did.
How did ya like that add.?

My Marlin 39A likes Federal hollow point 37 grain. Bulk boxed at Walmart about $10.00 for 500. They shoot as well as Elely red box which cost about $15.00 for 50.

Is anyone familiar with the Remington Cyclone? I think they are meant to be a hypervelocity load but I do not see that they are as fast as CCI Stingers or others like them. I have been very satisfied with the accuracy they have out of a TC Contender 21" match Barrel (carbine set-up) They shoot as good as any out of my Ruger 10-22. Great squirrel stoppers when faced with a charge in heavy cover!...Just kidding.

I shoot a lot of Richardson's Ground Squirrels every year. The Win Power Point is slightly more accurate than anything else I've used (plus fewer flyers) and is definitely a better killer. I've shot some Velocitors, but not enough to made a real comparision. I'm really happy that Win is producing PPs again. I ran out last year and couldn't restock. Everything else I tried (Fed Clasic hp, Win Dynapoint, CCi hp,) were inferior to PPs.

Hi all,
Don't know if you guys in the US have a source for it, but the most accurate ammo that I have ever used, and still continue to use as a benchmark ammo is Eley Standard ammo.
If it doesn't shoot reasonably consistent groups then I start looking for other reasons why the rifle doesn't shoot
Its comparable to other ammo in cost and it's definitely not their top of the range stuff which is 5 times more expensive
It just that I don't think I've ever seen it mentioned on this forum.

attached a pic of the ammo - (hope i did it right )

Velositors then mini mags for the hyper stuff.
if paper punching only and you don't want to spend a ton try some green tag

Rickster,
Your 541T HB probably won't shoot the high velocity stuff all that great regardless of ammo brand. The best thing you could do is sell me your rifle cheap and buy something else. :D BTW, my 541 shoots CCI Mini-mag +V pretty good but they are hard to find.

humm, I get my best groups out of cci stingers with my cz. Second choice is winchester xpert bulk, it hates remington anything, inc the target stuff. It just goes to show that you have to test each gun to find out.
my 1022 custom likes the federal 550 round bulk ammo the best of any.. i had some wildcats that shot pretty big patterns at 5o yards so i got a paco tool and used it on em an the groups shrank to about 1 1/2 in at 50 yards... the federals will all go into a hole you can cover with your fingertip at 50 yards...

HI....I have done a lot of work looking at .22 LR from an accuracy point ofi view...the .22LR headspaces on the rim...so consistancy is important....most match ammo is carefully QA with respect to rim thickness and will generally perform well in most rifles...
Now....most of us cannot afford match ammo...so..I have looked for alternatives....
Cheap stuff listed in order of preference....
1. CCI solid head
2. CCI hollow point
3. Remington sub sonic
4. Agilia standard
5. Federal
6. Remington standard coated
7. Winchester
I have been known to sort bulk ammo by rim thickness using a muffin tin and a Sinclair rim thickness guage. I find that promotional ammo, any manufacturer, has a lot of variability....normally ranging from .036 to .044 with most of the box being in the .040 and .044 bins.....now....the .22 LR spec is .042...my 10.22 bolt and barrel face is cut to yield a .42 headspace....what this means is that if you shoot sorted or match ammo....you will group in one place....if you don't sort...expect to see flyers....
if you have not remachined your rifle as I have done then you will need to find out what your rifle likes....and feed that to it...when i cannot get CCI solids...I usually get Federals.....they seem to be very consistent...Remingington and Winchester are all over the place....
