View Full Version : Scope Bases VZ 24
I am a new member.I would like to pick your brains. I have a Bruno VZ 24 Check. Mauser and I am looking for a 2 piece set of scope bases. Do you know if the action profile of my VZ 24 is the same as a Mauser 98 ? If not what size bases should I look for?

Basically yes, however to use two piece bases, you'll need to grind the "clip guide" down to match the contour of the rest of the rear reciever bridge, then the regular "98" bases will fit. If you could live with a one piece mount, "B Square" makes one with a notch to fit over the clip guide, & is simpler to install than two piece bases.

tjud,
Contrary to above comment, the VZ24 is not identical to other 98 Mausers. While the receiver ring is the smae diameter, the bridge is about .025" lower than either 98's or commercial Mark-X or FN Mauser actions. A standard 98 base can be used, however, by shimming the back of the base. If the base is not shimmed, then considerable bending force will be applied to the telescope.

I just checked the one & only rifle I have with a VZ24 action,(this one has iron sights) against two DWM Mfg 1908 Brazilian actions I have, & there is some slight difference in height -about .008 on one action,& .012 on the other one. I would assume this to be manufacturing tolerances between Mfg's, but also needs to be checked every time one installs a scope mount on a military action, as these were manufactured by many different companys, over almost 100yrs, so some differences could be expected.Yes sometimes you need to shim to get everything lined up. This is why I personally prefer a one piece mount -just makes everything a lot easier, though I've used quite a few two piece bases in the past. Just goes to show it's never safe to assume anything!

Amen, brother!
Exactly what I found out this summer putting new base, rings, and scope on my VZ-24. Considering the military manufacturers had no reason to hold their tolerances so tight in these non-critical areas, they're very close.
The reason I removed the two-piece and installed a new one-piece base was, the new scope wouldn't adjust far enough to compensate for the miss-alignment of the individual bases. The one-piece, however, is straighter and holds its true.
And, I too had to shim the back end. Don't know how thin or thick it was; the shim was cut from an Arizona-brand iced tea can. The green color clashes with the rest of the rifle but that can be fixed with sight black.
