Ever run into people that receieve heirloom firearms that have no interest in them and just want to give them away or for very little cash? I put a M1 Garand from one friend to another in that way. My question concerns firearms classified as antique that do not require FFL transfers. If you don't know the individual too well, how can you protect yourself 'changing hands' on a firearm to make sure you are not receiving a gun used in a crime or had been stolen? I may very well be in a position to pick something up this way, but don't want to wind up going to a range one day, or getting pulled over and wind up in jail for years. Thanks -MJ

While you can't really be sure the gun wasn't used in a crime, you can help the police know that YOU got the gun legally. Just have the guy write up a simple reciept for you showing the date of the transfer, the type and serial no. of the gun, and the price, if any, and have him sign it. have two copies. One for you and one for him. And maybe put your signature on it too. I've seen it done this way once.
