I'm brand new here, but have lurked for awhile. I have found a 45-90 pedersoli Sharps for a decent price. The old boy selling it claims it will shoot 45-70's as well as the 45-90's. I can't say as I've ever heard this before, but I've been around very few 45-90's. He likened it to 38 specials in a 357...is there any truth to this or am I being leg-pulled a bit?

And sorry if this is in the wrong forum, please let me know where it needs to be. Thanks in advance for any replies...Baggsy-Wy

Welcome in from the lurking-cold, Baggsy.
You might care to re-post the question on the Lever-action forum. And enter "45/90" in the search box above that forum to find quite a lot of stuff on the 45/90, including the fact that the 45/90 case is 1/10" longer than a 45/70, and that one can use 45/70 brass in a 45/90.
Sorry I can't help you, I'm the original shooting dimwit. I wouldn't know a muzzle from a breech if I hadn't joined the board.

Don't let him fool you, Bagsy - Richard has been around the block a few times!

Welcome to the board - I'm sure you'll find all the info on the 45-90 you'll need if you follow his advice.

Be sure to join the discussions - we never know what lurkers are thinking!

Baggys,

I assume that's for Baggs. 75 miles to the SW. In the "old" days it was common for people to shoot .45-70's in a .45-90. There are some problems, however. You are releasing those hot gases into the chamber, which caused fouling in black powder loads, and some erosion in the smokeless loads. Not recommended, but safe and very possible. Starline, however, will sell the .45-90 brass to load.

By the way, a .45-70 case is 2.1". A .45-90 case is 2.4". That's .3" difference; not .1".

My last name is Baggs, my great uncle and great Grandpa are the name-sake of Baggs, Wyoming. They did some mining up on Bridger peak and made enough to buy quite a chunk of the Little Snake River bottom. Always thought I should be honorary king or prince of the place! I live in Cheyenne, but hunt goats north of you up by Bairoil.

Thanks for the welcome, I'll do some searching out here. Has anyone ever sent an e-mail to the Pedersoli website? I was thinking I may try and get a manual for it from them if I decide to get it. I'll have to buy another pack mule to pack it though. It's darn HEAVY!
