I'm really hard to please when it comes to Hunting/Shooting magazines. Sporting Classics is one of the best. I don't believe I've ever seen a "30-06 vs. 270" type article. The magazine has some great writers, Michael McIntosh and Ross Seyfried, are two of the best. Lots of articles about hunting in different parts of the world, though plenty of attention is given to the U.S. Great photography and art throughout the magazine. Great fishing articles to go with the hunting and shooting stories.

On a related note - the current Handloader/Rifle has an article on cast bullets in the 411 Hawk. Thought you might be interested, if you haven't seen it.

Thanks Mike. I haven't seen that, but will pick up the issue if I can find it. Sometimes, the Wolfe Publishing stuff is hit and miss at the local newstands.

Sporting Classics is very good. I have subscribed for several years. I wish more would read it but it is probably a little "high-brow" for many sportsmen. In comparison, the new, revamped Sports Afield is very similiar but not quite as artistic.

I like the new Successful Hunter being put out by Wolfe Publishing. Compliments the Rifle and Handloader magazines quite well.

Wolf Publishing is the only one that still gets my subscroption money any more. The rest have sold out to advertizers. I like everything that they publish.

Bouhunter,
It does seem that some magazines are nothing more than advertisments for manufacturers, but there are quite a few out there that are still in fine form. Wolfe Publishing has three good ones, but The Accurate Rifle and Precision Shooting are a couple that are very good also. There is no pandering at all in those magazines.

Don Heath's African Hunter is probably the most cynical of manufacturers of them all. He bases his observations on true field conditions in Africa with off the shelf rifles and never pulls any punches.

Sporting Classics is very good in my opinion, though I don't believe I've ever read a negative comment about anything.

Some of these are hard to come by, unless you subscribe to them directly (at least they are up here). The Double Gun Journal is more of a book than a magazine and is quite the publication, if you are into doubles.

Sporting Classics was/is a great read, with excellent artwork and photography.
I have about the first 10 years of issues stacked on the shelves in my den.
Can't ever recall a "how-to" article being published during that time.
I stopped subscribing when they continued to upgrade the targeted audience and finally got way out of my financial level.
