A buddy and me were going to go do a little quail hunting when a visiting relative asked if he could come along. He'd never been hunting, and even though an alarm bell went off in my head, we said sure love to have ya. We made our way out to a good spot where there was a big dry wash heavy with high brush and trees along both sides. We put "greenhorn" in the wash, I took a spot about 50 yards to one side, my buddy to the other. We couldn't see each other, just spoke once in a while to keep tabs. After a while of nothing much happening, all of sudden I hear greenhorn yell "DEER....IT"s a FAWN".....followed by several shotgun blasts. Great. Just great. Here we are quail hunting and he's shooting deer. Out of season, no permits, illegal weapon (birdshot), and illegal deer (fawn). They could take our guns and truck and lock us up for a long time on this. I saw the doe skidaddle down the wash followed by a the fawn walking out of the brush and stopping about 12 feet in front of me. Well, I figured, the poor things full of birdshot, I best put it down. I dispatched the poor creature and announced in a loud voice " it's o.k., I got it down over here. Where upon greenhorn says "but I got it down over HERE!" There were two of them.

So why would you break the law by shooting the deer? If that was the deer he shot I would have made him finish what he started!!! By doing what you did your no better then he is in the eyes of the law!!! It also sounds like he didn't have a lincense to be hunting anyway? Especially since you said he'd never hunted before? Did he ever complete a hunters safety course? Was he a resident of AZ? So did you report the incident to the Game warden? You may get upset with what I've said but you sir are not a hunter in my eye's and you bring nothing but shame to our sport!!

Well theres one mans opinion. I think you need to carefully re-read the post....and place yourself in that position at the time. Yes, he did get a license...yes , he lived here long enough to qualify as a resident..but just. No, there wasn't a saftey hunters course available in the hour it took to get from the house to the field. I didn't think to ask the animal " wait here a just a minute, don't go anywhere, I'm going to go get the guy that started this", silly me. And finally, I killed what I THOUGHT was a severly wounded animal so it wouldn't die a long, painful death from lead posioning......WHICH WAS THE POINT OF THE WHOLE STORY...DUHHHH
Gentlemen,
Both sides have had their say, so let's quit while we're ahead and it gets any worse. Please.

Bowtek,
I have heard and seen worse, not by much, but still worse.
I had one of my clients kill a sub-legal moose this fall while accompanied by an assistant...it was WAAAYYY sub legal too! 34 inch antlers in a fifty inch area. It was ugly.
I also know guys that have killed two sheep in a mistaken identity case. I heard of one fella that killed THREE grizzlies in one willow patch because he thought the bear kept getting up after the shot. It was a sow and a couple two year old cubs.
These things do happen. I believe that what measures us as sportsmen is how we handle it when it does. My experience has been that if one notifies authorities, tells the truth and prays alot, usually, there is a pretty mild consequence.
Heaven help the poor bugger that gets caught trying the old cover up routine.
I wish you the best as you sort this out. I do not envy you.

Coldfingers....the story I told took place about 25 years ago so it's ancient history now. These things do happen though. The good hunter trys to abide by the laws but, every now and then, a curve ball comes at you and you deal with it as the moment dictates. THREE grizzlies..it just kepted getting up.....I don't feel so bad now!

Well if had mentioned all the above added info in the original post it might have made my response different, not much! Twenty five years ago I'm sure there wasn't a hunting course available. You failed to mention he had a license etc. But the piont still remains why would expose your self to illegally shot even what you thought was a wounded animal- I would have mde that yahoo who did the law breaking finish his dirty work -friend or no friend!!
DOK
I may have been harsh in my first response to bowtek, but I can't abide by folks making my sport of hunting look bad and breaking the law! This is a public forum and I quite sure the Anti's look here for ammo to use against us.

Gunnut, understood. We expect different opinions, some strongly different, but we need to be as civil as possible in any situation. That way we all get to make our points and keep the moderators so they can sleep at nights.....and I need all the beauty sleep I can get. Thanks for the thought.

Well Bub,
You opened up a can of worms.
Whether it's our own children, our friends or our relatives that we take into the woods, we still bear responsibilty.
If something like this would have happened on my hunting operation. I would have stopped the hunt, thrown all parties off the property, donated the venison to charity only after calling the game warden.
I would be more harsh in my post if similar experiences hadn't happened to me. I have had hunters kill hen turkeys, button bucks, and be over the limit on dove and ducks after I thoughly went over the harvest rules and the safety rules.
The best hunts I have been on in my life were the ones that operated under strict guidelines and complete safety.
Trust me, your friend is an accident waiting to happen.
Your story reminds me that I need to stress even more this coming season what the hunter can and cannot do.Trust that little alarm bell in your head when you sense danger. It will bail you out in the long run.
Respect the game and the firearm
By the way, do you still hunt with this guy?

My uncle shot 3 does the exact same way once. He shot her, saw her get up, and shot again. She got up again, and he shot once more. Walked over the hill, and there's 3 does in a pile. I don't remember what he said he did afterwards, though. Heard a story about a guy hunting in a buck only county who shot a buck and his bullet went thru and killed a doe too.

By the way, do you still hunt with this guy? Negative. He was not invited again and lost interest in hunting. He moved back east after awhile, haven't seen him in over twenty years.

About 3 years ago I had a doe/fawn tag for an area near the Sweetwater River. I was hunting in late September. Every other hunter must have either given up or tagged out because I was by myself. Early in the afternoon I spotted a herd of about 20 does and fawns feeding on grassy hillside. I put a sneak on them from the only direction I could without being seen. I wide swath of sagebrush about 2 feet high bordered the grassy area where they were, so I was able to wiggle through to get close. When I thought I was near I peaked my head up above the sage and saw a lone doe about 100 yard out. I dropped back down and was able to snake about 30yards closer. I was using an old 25 Remington I inherited from my dad, handloaded with 100 grain Nosler BT,s (single shot fashion). Took a sitting position and when the sight picture looked good, I squeezed one off. Even the slight recoil of the 25 prevented me from seeing the result of my shot. Instantly the herd, which obviously had drifted around the hill, came tearing toward me, not knowing where the shot had come from. I had no idea if I had connected or not so I didn't shoot. I even had one confused doe stop and turn broadside at about 20 yards. After they disappeared I stood up and dusted myself off and walked toward where the doe I shot at was standing. I found one very dead doe antelope. She obviously hadn't taken a step after the shot.
I guess the point is that had I been 20 years younger, I'm not sure I would have had the self discipline not to shoot again. With age comes maturity, hopefully. Let's not be too quick to judge our fellow hunters.

I have a friend that was a detective in Thurston County Wa. He went goose hunting and had a 10 Ga. He was sitting on a point and saw a large flock coming in. He was sitting on a stump and just bent his head down and tried not to move. When the geese were in his sight walking on the point (very close by this point) he stood up and as they took off he raised and fired. The geese dropped the the shot pattern of the gun. He told me his exact words were Ah Sh-t no one is going to believe this. From behind him he hears, I saw it and I don't believe it. It was a game warden. He was allowed to take his limit, three. The warden took the rest.
