I am considering moving to Alaska for a year or so. If anybody has been there or lives there...how is it? I dont know much about Alaska, other than its supposed to be beautiful....

Where are you moving from? Other than being an hour from the airport, do you have any other requirements?
Anchorage is a city, but you can get into the backcountry in 15 minutes from just about anywhere in twon. Girdwood is a neat place, the west side of it bordering the 500,000 acre Chugach State Park, the north and east side bordering the 5.6 million acre Chugach National Forest. Downside is the road in the winter trying to get to the airport.
Palmer and Wasilla are both within a hour, just depends on what you like.
I'm heading down to Reno for the SCI and ACGG shows, but will be back next Monday. If you want to send me an email or PM telling me a little about yourself, I'll try to help.
Alaska isn't for everybody, most either love it or hate it. Cost of living is pretty expensive, but most jobs take that into consideration with the pay scale.
If you have any specific questions, there are quite a few foks here from Alaska, and we'll try to answer the best we can.

JL,
I've posted a bunch of pictures here in this "My Neck Of The Woods" forum. Look at some of the pictures posted here to see if you would like the scenery and seasons.
Another thing I would warn you about, if you like it, one year in Alaska isn't enough. This state is huge (more than twice the size of Texas) and the topography and climates are widely varied. There's not a place I've been around this state that I haven't enjoyed.

I think Im looking in either a 60 mile radius of anchorage or fairbanks, but this is still pending my company's approval (which is still completely up in the air.), Im crossing my fingers.
