View Full Version : Downloading for plinking

I load Red Dot, Unique, and 2400, for my .41 mag and .45 ACP.

But, I'd like to download some plinkers for my wife in .41 mag, and the minimum in these powers is still a bit too "peppery" for her.

I'm told 231 will download nicely, but have trouble finding charts for that in .41.
I'm also a bit leery of lots of air space in cartridges (yeah, blackpowder guy).
I like GOEX Clear Shot, but I'm afraid it will smoke my wife out of all enthusiasm.

Thoughts, anyone?

I recommend Titegroup. Should be able to get plenty of data on the Hodgdon web site.

If you are loading SWC's, and are staying at minimum loads, set the bullet so that the case mouth is even with the top of the bullet shoulder - not the crimp groove. Then lightly crimp on the shoulder. This will help take up excess air space and will also leave your cases cleaner. It is what I do with reduced loads in .44 Mag, .45 Colt, .357 mag., etc.

Outstanding!

Thanks very much. I'll try that.
Great idea.

I used 4 grs of Bullseye with a 215 gr SWC in my 41. I sented them as Mike mentioned. It shot very well and recoil was light, even in my 28oz Taurus Tracker.

Thanks,
Sounds like a load I should try.

Elrod,
Judging from your general discussion post about your wife getting dinged in the forehead I'd say you haven't gotten them light enough yet!

"D'oH!"

You're right ya know.

Tonight I loaded a bunch of different trial cartridges with what I've got on hand. Hopefully tomorrow morning I won't feel like death warmed over when I get up and can go to the club range.

I know my blackpowder loads are just fine for reduced recoil, but when we stepped out today spontaneously I didn't listen to my inner voice saying "Load up a dozen of those for her."
Instead I grabbed my load starting target rounds and figured she could handle them.
After all, she said she could shoot what I shoot and besides, she grew up shooting her father's Police Special in the fifties (he was a motor cop).

Welp, I just hadn't yet tried reduced load with the pill down in the hull farther.

Get this: the Doc sewing her up said he had interned in an Emergency room and one time a gang-banger kid came in who'd had his "nine" stuffed in his pants when a rival gang started chasing him.
When he went to pull it out it discharged and the round went through Mr. Wiggly!
They patched him up, but he'll never be the same.

Ow-wee!

Elrod, glad to see the info for the reduced loads for the .41 mag, wife has been wanting to try my Bh out.
As for the guy that shot Mr Wiggly, we had a guy here couple of years back that got into a verbel with his buddy. He went home and got his Ruger .357 mag loaded it, cocked it and tucked it down the front of his pants. When He grabbed it to pull it out put the Right one in the Left pocket. OUCH it hurts to just think about it.

Enjoy

I'm beginning to think there is something to "Natural Selection" after all.
