I just received my LBT tester. Operation is quite simple, put speciman in, turn knob until needle hits the set mark, press the pressure bar down and let it up. Needle reads direct BHN. Total test procedure approximately 5 to 10 seconds.

As for Repeatability, you get the same results (5 or 6 trys in a 45 WFN).

Now I wondered if the rumors about Wheel weight old vs. new was true. You read many places that new ww metal is only 9 bhn air and 14 to 16 water dropped.

Chicago area ww metal pigged up over last two years 11 BHN air cool 22 water dropped.

St. Louis area WW recent months - Same.

WW pigged up in 1980 by my father - Same.

Water dropped WW bullet recovered from a hog shot in 2001 reads 18 BHN now.

Hornady round ball reads 5 BHN.

Bear tooth bullets bought in 2000 or 2001 read 21-22.

Metal I hoarded because I though it was linotype reads 14 BHN (guess not)

Old stain glass window lead reads 10

Lead shielding I though was pure lead reads 12 BHN (wrong again).

Quite an eye opener. I think WW at least from major cities from national tire chain is just like it used to be.

This testor seems accurate based on what I thought readings would be. My wife sure doesn't think it looks like 90 bucks worth of parts, but I don't think there is anything comparable on the market given ease of use and apparent accuracy.

Nice report, it's good to see some makers of reloading equipment make quality tools at a reasonable price that actually perform as advertised. Glad to hear you are happy with your purchase.

Although a little pricey, the LBT tester is still the best on the market in terms of ease of use, durability and repeatability.

Thanks for the report.... interesting findings, especially the lead shielding... thought it would have been closer to BHN 5-6!

Thanks,

God Bless,

Where do I get one? I have seen the Saeco tester at Midway but have yet to find the LBT hardness tester. Also, which is better?

Flinch,

Here's where you can get the LBT hardness tester: http://www.leverguns.com/lbt/hardness_tester.htm

I've got the Saeco personally. Which one is better?

I dunno...I suspect that if either one was clearly superior, it would put the other company out of the hardness tester business.
