Thought I'd get this Big Bore thread going to get others started like on MT.
What distance do you sight your big bore for? I suppose if it's a woods gun, probably 100yds. or less. I developed some loads for my Guide Gun and tomorrow I'll use 100 yds. to check for best group. Then I'll sight it in for 50 yds. and practice out to 100yds.
Does that sound like reasonable distances for a woods gun big bore? I'll also shoot out to 200 yards to know the trajectories between 100-200yds. Thanks, Robie.

I hunt with a .444 marlin, my shots are generally under 100yds but may stretch to 150. Due to those conditions this is how my rifle is sighted. 1" high at 50yds, 1.75" high at 100yds, zero @ 135 and about -1" at 150yds. This way I am covered nomatter where the deer is. Hope this helps and man am I glad to see a Big Bore forum here.

I always sight in every deer size game gun, unless it is a dedicated LR rifle, for a 6 inch vital zone and MPBR. If that means a 75 yard zero for a .454 or a 175 yard zero for a 7mm STW, so be it. That way I can hold dead out out to my maximum point blank range and know that my bullet will hit within three inches of where I am aiming. It takes a lot of the guess work out of shooting when there is little time for a shot.

I have my guide set at 3" high at 100 yards shooting a 300 Gr. Sierra..
I am shooting in the bush with the odd field.
Deer in the freezer.
Now what are you boys loading?

I sight in my GG 1" high @ 50 yards. Like mattpair said. That takes care of everything from the muzzle to 150yards.The bush is very thick. The average shot here (if the thruth be told) is about 35-45 yards. Although many don't want to believe it until they shoot over the top of their first deer. 100 yards is a long shot. The problem isn't so much hitting them it's seeing them.
I almost forgot. Your plan is sound in my book.

Me. too.
Oddly, for my 375 and .45-70 Marlins, as well as my buddy's 336, that works out to be almost eactly 3.0" high at 100 yards with a MPBR of 200 yards and spitting distance.
All our hunting loads are in the neighborhood of 2200fps (2341fps for the .30-30). The sight-in height at 100 yards and MPBR will change if using other velocities.

When testing new loads, I start out at 50 yards with my 45-70 to insure my sights and the new load are some where close, then move to 100 yards. Once I get the grouping that I like I'll move to the 300 yard line to test for grouping at 200 yards and what my sights need to be adjusted to hit bull at that distance. I can then come back to 100 yards and see what sort of hold under I need to account for.
I'm getting reciever sights put on my Winchester 1886 and Browning 1895 I'll get to repeat this process this spring.

I have a Guid Gun in .45-70 that shoots 405 Rem's at 1700fps. My rifle has the wildwest ghost ring sights and a Burris 2.75X Scout scope. With the ghost ring sights, I'm dead on at 100 yds. and if I put the front sight at the bottom of the large ghost ring rear sight I'm good to 200yds.
With the scope, It's the same, I'm dead on at 100 and If I hold where thin line of the cross hair meets the heavy plex. It's good at 200. My range has a 6" steel swinging targets just short of the 200yd line. I dont have a problem hitting them with either sights. In fact with the Leupold QR rings I can take the scope off hit the plate, then put the scope back on and do it agian.

:D I was wondering wereI got "the 3" high idea" from, and now I remember. Thanks again buddy. You were right on the money. This works good for the 45/70 and the 35 Rem.
I have set 2.5'' high at 100 yrs. for the 180 gr bullet.
Now the 30/30 /308/3006 and the 6.5x55 have the usual 1.5 inch high at 100 yrs. Figure that should get the job done as far as I can see enough to shoot.
Now I worked up ol' Jack fish load 45/70 of 56 gr. H 4198 under a 300 gr. Sierra in a Winchester case to bag the deer with it.
I aslo found that Ireally like a 2x20 weaver scope in thick bruch where shots are close and fast
Now the winnie94 gets 33gr. H4895 with the 170 gr bullet. . The deer rather not have me say that it is loaded a bit warm as it always get's the job done with in the range of the 30/30 using speer bullets.
:( Warning do not load your 30/30 like I do since 32gr. is already at max.Every rifle is different.

50 yds then move to 100 yds. I shot iron sights. I`m about 2" high @ 50 and dead on @ 100. Still good enough @ 150 to kill a deer.

444P....iron sights - offhand @ 50 Yards, shooting at pie plate, then switch to pop cans. HAHAHA...farthest I've killed a deer is 47 yards (that one was with a bow). The closest was 6 yards. I used to shoot my M70 at 300 yards and strive for the tiny groups, then take it into brush where I couldn't see 20 feet! No need. I like to bring 'em in close. I still practice further, but just for kicks.

I have my 1895G 45-70 sighted in 3 inches high at 100. That puts it about 3 inches low at 200 yards. I'm shooting the Hornady 300 grain JHP. The deer really dont like that round!! :D
I'm ex MT as well. 3.5 inches high at 100 yds with the 350gr fp hornadys . I don't know why though as I have never had a shot farther than 100 yds yet with the 45-70.

I usually sight my woods rifles to 100yds. Most shots I have are no more than 75yds and that's 25ft up in my treestand! On the ground my shots are no further than 30-40yds. I use to sight them to hit dead on at 150yds but where I hunt now it isn't useful anymore. Sighting in for 100 limits bullet rise in the thickets I hunt and is all "I" need.

We estimated there were over 1400 elk out there - the little brown dots. The herd extended well beyond the limits of the picture. No 50 yard shots there!

Looks like I am in good company. ;)
My 45-70 is sighted in 3" high at 100yds which is just below zero at 150yds and just below 3" at 175yds. For the areas I hunt, that's plenty of reach.

Thanks for all the responses. I think I'm gonna sight dead-on at 100yds. for now. Where I'm taking the GG is short shooting for the most part. Robie.

A friend of mine sighted his 1895 in 45-70 to 200 yards with no problem. I'm not sure what load though.
