If I'm going to start this forum then let it be on the .41! Who else here hunts with one? It'll be another month and a half before I can reclaim mine from storage. Missed the whole deer season this year due to obligations here in Iraq.

Thanks for serving, not an 88M are ya? I'm trying to save up for a 1894pg ss. Once the money comes in I'll be visiting this forum for ideas.

Sure hope you know how proud of you we are and look forward to having the only shooting you do be in fields of your dreams.
My 1894 is a .44 mag because of the handgun choices I've made....but I'm one .44 shooter that wouldn't argue the .41 is an excellent choice.

Combat Diver, you will like your Marlin FG. I came home in July from OIF and my Dad presented me a new M1894FG that I had ordered at the local gunshop right before I left (ordered in Jan 03, delivered in Jun 03). I had it drilled and tapped for a Lyman 66LA receiver peepsite and plan to put a Williams Firesite in place of the issue gold bead front site. My carbine really likes the new Winchester 240 grain Supreme Platinum Tip factory ammo. I do have a reload worked up using the 210 grain Sierra bullet and Alliant 2400 powder, but have not had a chance as of yet to run a pressure/accuracy test with the loads I have made. The rifle handles great, I did not shot a deer this year, but I did snap shoot a feral pit bull that was running with a dogpack on our deer lease. The Winchester Supreme load knocked him off his feet with a lung shot at about 60 yards and while he kicked a minute he was dead by the time I walked up to finish him off. Welcome home! Odessa

Been using a 1894 in 41 Mag since they came out back in the 80's. I'm glad to see that they are back in production. Right now I am using 220 grain hand loads in mine, and can get 1" groups at 100 yards using a williams peep sight. Have to remove the apprature when hunting tho. Got a nice buck last season (135 yards with rangefinder) could have been more or less + or - 5 ft. Only took one shot, and he dropped within 10 yards. I don't usualy take shots that far, but it was 3 hours till the end of season. The only thing I don't like about my .41 is the safety, but I just leave it off, and use the half cock like the rest of my 1894's

Dan, first off let me say you SF guys are the salt of the earth, I had the opertunity to hang arround a few while I was stationed at Ft. Bragg and in Romania waiting to go downrange. I am currious about the 41mg how does it compare to the .44? What kind of factory loads are out there?

Odessa thanks for your service over here. Mine's not a FG, its a earlier 1894S that I picked up during Christmas 88'. Also installed a Williams reciever site on her.
Matt, the .41 compares well with the .44 with standard weight bullets. Its in the realm of heavy weights that the 44 is superior do to the fact theirs a lack of heavies for the .41. Haven't had the oppurtunity to try Beartooths heavy .41 yet been overseas since 00'. Once I firmly plant my feet back on good ol' USA soil and dig my 41 out of storage I'll try some.

Williams Sight Co. said that they offer several receiver peep sights (the kind that fits into the scope holes on top the receiver). The front sight may have to be replaced with a higher or shorter sight, but you do not have to drill holes in the 41 mag. to mount a Lyman peep sight.
mattpair, what unit are you with I was also in Romainia. Right now I am currently serving with 2-24 INF at Ft Drum, we were opcon to SF.
Anyone know the forecasted pricing? I've been admiring the photo in Marlin's catalog. Looks real finished with the steel nose cap and curved lever.
Worth saving up for one.

TR, from what I have seen the M1894FG seems to be in the $459.00 range. I am sure you find one cheaper or more expensive, depending on area of the country and desireability. I did not ask my Dad what he paid for mine. Odessa

The only one's i've seen for sale are nearing the $500 range, and I've had several dealers tell me that they aren't available yet. I know that they are, but it seems the ones who do think they can charge a premium as if the FG was a limited run. I want one, but I also want the Smith .41 mag back that I sold stupidly too. :(
Now Marlin is offering the 1894 chambered for .480 Ruger/.475 Linebaugh, and I can't wait to see what local dealers price that one at.
Used CBC models are going for $600; USED that is! I need more coffee...,.. :(
As I understand it, the 44 MAG typically has a .429 bullet. Yet 41 MAG features a .410 bullet. Seems to me the difference in diameters is quite small indeed. Same difference between 25-06 and .270 and I'll tell you from experiance that a deer shot with either cartridge is headed for the meat pole, pronto.
Yet for a long time 41 MAG has been ignored by many deer hunters. I'm hoping Marlin's new offering will rescue 41 MAG from fading. Planning to buy one in July and do some stand huntin' with it come November.

I have both the 44 and the 41, and end up using the 41 the most. It pairs well with my model 57 S&W or my Ruger Redhawk. Loaded with 220 grain Keiths, it stops whitetails like they were hit with a sledghammer. Just remember to keep your shots within 100 yards, and I don't think you will be disapointed in the caliber. I've been considering buying a second one and making it a half mag model with a 16 1/2 "
barrel, it should be quite light. I don't care for the full forearms that Marlin puts on their 1894's, so I slim them down to the same configuration that the originals had. I end up removing the finish from the stocks and refinishing them as well. There is enough meat in the butstock to cut it down to the original carbine configuration.and get rid of the shotgun appearance as well. It looks like a good summer project this year, I just have to purchase a new steel butplate from Gun Parts Corp. and get started. All mods should remove about 2-3 pounds from the carbine, and make it a lot handier.

mattpair, I was staged in some old barracks over there, prior to deploying. I was also in a hotel but I can'tremember the name of it. We were in the city of Constanta if that helps.

It doesn't get much better than the .41 Marlin for deer and black bear hunting. Unfortunately I was skunked this past year with the new FG. Couldn't get within 60-65 yards of several doe and that's a bit of a stretch for my vision with factory sights.
I just received a batch of the new Speer 210-grain Gold Dots. Hope to have some results to publish soon.

I wish I could remember where I got them, but in the late 80's I ordered several different weights of cast bullets for my 41 Redhawk, and the biggest one was a 295-grain plain base cast bullet. They shot well out the Redhawk, but I used up the 200 I had, and lost the company info where I got them. Anybody else ever try these? I'm sure if you look hard enough they'll turn up somewhere.

Actually the Army National Guard in its current form was created by the Dick Act in 1905. It's roots go back to the first militia companies formed at the Plymouth Rock MA colony. The Organized Militia (current ARNG) was provided for in Article II of the Constitution; the 2nd Admendment refered to the militia of the whole or the unorganized militia, which we today consider the entire citizenry. Thus the 2nd Amendment confers an individual right, not a collective right. Odessa
