Well, I have an old 1950 something Mossberg model 52b in 22 rimfire and with its trusty Lymens peep site, it has held my interest for both plinking and target fun. With that said I have always had my eye on the 22 Wincester Rimfire Magnum, but With ammo cost approaching centerfire cartridge prices I never got on the boat. Now I have spent a good deal of time of late reading up on the New 17 caliber Hornady Rimfire Magnum. It is amazing what a necked down 22WRM can do! My mouth is watering! I want this round! Has anyone here had any practical experience with it? What rifle(s) are you using? While I am enamoured with lever actions, I think this round deserves a bolt action to call home. Feedback anyone?

I've got a Savage something or other, bolt action, five shot clip, synthetis stock. Got a 3-9X on it. I think I liked the fixed 4X better though. This little *** will shot the eyes out of a squirrel moving at a 100 yds . . . so to speak. Definitely a darn good squirrel gun for longer shots. Take a few plastic bags with you though because its an explosive little bullet. An accurate bullet though provided there is absolutely nothing between you and the target except thin air. I've put 2 of 3 in a half inch target at 130 yrds. It was stuck a picture of Bin Ladens head, so I had extra incintive I guess. I can't decide what else I should use it for except snipe the neighbors Dachsund that keeps craping on my sidewalk and carport.

An excellent round that seems to be inherently accurate. No matter what barrel it comes out of it hits the target....but you have to find the ammo the weapon likes. My brothers savage likes the CCI's and my friends likes the Hornady's (barbie bullets, heheheh).

Last time out we set up an old trailer hitch coupler (the end of the trailer tongue) out at 25yds. I shot it and the thing didnt move. Woulda thunk it missed except for the "paper-punch perfect" hole in it. This was using the CCI hollow point. The same round will punch through a 4x4 treated beam at 100yds without fragging. Great penetration.

The little mag is racking up some exploits I wont mention here :)

Have a Ruger M77/22 in .22WMR. Noticed Midsouth Shooter's Supply had some Green Mountain heavy and fluted barrels available for it in the .17 HMR chambering, so ordered one and installed it on the Ruger. Man, that thing is one great combination! Heard some bad rep's on the CCI ammo, so haven't tried anything other than the standard Hornady B.T.'s in it yet.

Sub-MOA groups are monotnous regular, provided the cross winds don't exceed 5 to 10 mph. Then it gets sacked up to await a better day.

the 17 is a great and fun way to learn to dope the wind, a buddy or two, a small gong at 150 yds and you'll be looking forward to a breezy day.

Aceman,

Last time I went shopping (last month) for 22 mag ammo the 17 HMR ammo was more $$. There's another 17 coming out and its the .17 HM2. Its a necked down .22LR to .17. As a new round, expect ammo to cost more than .22LR.

I was told a coupla days ago that Hornady didn't make their own ammo, but that CCI made it. The person that told me that claims he was told by a personal friend of Steve Hornady. I have no idea one way or another, so......

Believe you're right, Hatch -

I've heard or read the same thing. Only, the CCI ammo isn't anywhere near as accurate as the Hornady. Guess it's that poly tipped bullet that does the trick. The Federal and the Remington are equal to the Hornady, and they've got the poly tipped bullets, also.

Although i won a Rem 597 in .17 earlier this year, have yet to shoot it so i don't have any practical knowledge about it. I'm looking forward to getting it sighted-in and using it on our particular "varmints" around here..
