I was looking at a 94 44 and a 95G and the G won!!!
It came w/ 40-50- rds of "trap door safe " ammo 405grain.rated at 1300fps. I wish I still had the MT resouce for all the excanged data on these loads. I' not started reloading yet so I don't have balistic table. Can someone tell me where in the scheme the load falls? I sight in a scope tommorow , will the sight change much w/ factory loads? will this ported gun ruin what's left of my rock and rolled ears??
Thanks cw

Seaweaver,
The MarlinTalk forum is open until the 20th if you want to search their site again. You just can't post anything. Maybe you can find some load info.

Seaweaver,
Congrats on the new rifle - - - I have been shooting the Guide Gun in 45/70 since it was first available - - it is a terrific rifle.
The 1300 fps 405 grainers are about what I think of as medium velocity, safe factory loads.
I am loading 405 grain bullets at almost 1750 fps according to my Oelher chronograph and they thump me pretty good. I also have Randy Garret's 420 grain and 530 grain cartridges and before you "grab some of them" - - - grab on to your hat. The 420 grain Garret's chrono at just under 1800 fps out of my Guide Gun and they will definateley get your attention - - they will also get your wallet at $50.00 per box of twenty. I am working up loads now using 425 grain Btooth bullets and I am pretty sure I can come close to the velocity of Randy Garret's cartridige - - - if my shoulder can take it!
good luck to you with the new rifle,
Fletch

seaweaver -
Congrats on your new Guide Gun! Now you need to seriously think about reloading!
Price out factory ammo, then consider you can build plinking loads for around $2.50 per 20, and super-premium ammo for the cost of Win/Rem/Fed factory stuff.

Yes.. I'm Gonna Be a Reloader now!!
I've seen some of the prices of fact.loads but I assume thats where I get most of my brass. I was looking at bullet selection last night when my bride ran me off the computer so I did'nt check brass avail. or prices.
Coyote Hunter,
Whats your recipie for $2.50/20? I'd love a cheep plink round as it cost me 1.5 hrs to drive to the range! We Have taxpaid ranges all over here but taxpayer's can't use them.
thanks

Many years ago I used to buy factory ammo to get the brass. But now I prefer to just buy bulk brass and load my own from the start. I've had good luck with Starline Brass. Haven't tried any other brands in 45-70. Just bought 250 cases from Starline for less than $90. I usually full-length resize and deburr the cases before loading them. I'll trim them after the first firing if they seem to vary much in length or exceed the max length as specified in the reloading books.
