Hello to all of you
Let me introduce myself as this is the first time I have contributed to the forum although I read it regularly. My name is Bill (willgo) and I live in North Idaho. I've known Marshall Stanton for a lot of years and have been using Beartooth bullets almost exclusively.
Today there has been a lot of talk about the Rossi 1892 in both 454 Casull and .45 LC and it really peaked my interest as I recently purchased a 92' in .45 LC and have been testing it with a variety of loads. I selected a Rossi Hartford 1892 with a 24" octagon barrel and case colored action and it is a little gem. It will make an excellent brush gun for whitetail here in our heavily forested area.
I've been using the 300 gr.WLNGC bullet(sized .453)over 23.0 grains of H110 and it's giving me 3/4" groups at my initial testing range of 25 yards. The OAL must be kept at 1.652 or under to function through the action. While I haven't had the chance to chronograph this load as of yet, estimated velocity (based on this load from my 4" S&W 25-5) suggests that a point of impact of 2.3" high at 25 yards should put it dead on at 85 yards and it will only be around 3" low at 100 yards. If this proves out with further tests it will become my standard deer load. I might also add that this load while safe in a Ruger is about the max.
for an older S&W "N" frame and I wouldn't want to run a steady diet of them through it.
I've also be testing the 265 grain Keith over a load of 8.0 grains of Unique. Although this load is only averaging 2" groups at 25 yards it is a great plinking load and handles like a 22.. I'm adding a tang peep sight to the Rossi tomarrow to see if it will help improve my poor old eye sight and will keep working on other loads with Unique to see if I can tighten them up a bit. Once I have
finished my testing I'll run these loads through my chronograph and publish my findings here on the forum.
One final note. We had a primitive snowshoe biathlon (flint locks only) here last Saturday and I ran the course with my 92'yesterday using the 265 Keith load. Needless to say I hit every clanger and even lucked out and cut a turkey feather at the feather cut station. To say I'm happy with my new 92' would be an understatement.
My best to all of you. Stay well and keep safe.
Bill
