I am having problems finding a good 22 shell to shoot in a pistol. I am getting very inconsistent bullet speed and vertial stringing. This spring one bullet stuck in the barrel, America Eagle brand. Remington bulk pack Golden Bullets were so bad that I discarded the bulk pack after 50 shoots.
Can you recommend a good brand?
Thanks, Mike Taylor

Taylor,
My best advice is to get a box of each kind that is avaliable you and enjoy some serious shooting at the range. You should find several brands that will perform from your pistol. It is funny how each gun will have a favorite.
I hope you do not mind me moving your thread. You may get information faster from the rimfire folks that hit this section first.

Hi,
If you have poor results with more than one brand, might be time to have the gun checked out.... sounds like one possibility would be weak ignition.
I've never had a misfire with .22 rimfire.... not saying it doesn't happen, but it should be darn rare.
Start with a good cleaning of the gun. Are you getting a good indent on the rim from the firing pin? Compare to empties from other guns.....

years ago i bought a rimfire cartridge headspace gauge that measures the rim thickness of .22 LR cartridges. the thought behind this (i guess) is to sort the cartridges according to rim thickness. i have used it enough to see that differences in rim thickness does have a small effect on accuracy, but i'm not a target shooter so it wasn't worth the effort. some guns may be more sensitive to variations in rim thickness, so it may be worth checking out. the gauge i have says on it: Neil Jones Custom Products ( this phone # may still be good 814-763-2769)

I've had good luck with CCI Pistol Match, pricey @ $4.00/box. Wolf Match Target ($2.50) and Match Extra $3.50) and with Winchester Xpert ($.69). Clocking a small number with a chronometer, I had more consistent muzzle velocity than all but the CCI... Go figure. Down side is more misfeeds than the more expensive.
Good luck, Paul

I've had good luck with the bulk pack winchester and CCI from Wally world. Like you I stuck a bullet in the barrel of my pistol. It was the Remington bulk pack and I've not had that good of luck with the American Eagle brand either. I do know that some 22's respond better with a certian type of ammunition. I don't shoot the expensive kinds becuase most of my stuff is plinking.

Two that I consistently get great results with in both rifle and pistol are the RWS Subsonic HP and the Winchester Power Points. I have around a dozen 22s and all of them will shoot these two bullets better than anything else.
