Okay, first off, Ive been very content with Taurus guns for a very long time, so please lets not get too much into what other brands I might try.....whichever calibur I do get its definetly going to be a Taurus Tracker.

That said, Im looking at the Track .17 and thinking i want to get it with all the info Ive read so far.
The ballistics on the round is like unbelievable.

But I sold my .22 silhouette to get a tracker and now Im missing my plinking gun.

Does anyone know like if the .17 is gaining any ground in popularity and maybe the price of the ammo might come down at some point..........or is this round more than likely to go the route of the 22 mag?

Also i was reading that at least one type of round (32 mag?) is only being produced by Federal, which I figure is not helping the price come down for it, are there a few companies making .17 ammo ?

thanks

At the start, CCI, Hornady(loaded by CCI),Remington ammo was selling for $10-11.00 dollars a box on average. Now if you do some shopping around you can find the stuff for as little as $6.99 a box . This would probably be due to trying to stay competative with the .22 Magnum now that the "newness" of the .17 HMR is starting to wear off.

I'm curious, what will you be doing with your 17 handgun. I tossed it around myself for some time and chose not to buy it. I have a 17VS for varmint hunting. Very accurate. But, most of the time, I've found unless you shoot a groundhog in the head, the 17 does not "kill on the spot". Plus, with the rifle, the shots are 100 yards or more. The handgun (for accuracy) is maybe 25 yards. Then the ammo costs too much to just put holes in paper. I'm sure it's a nice handgun, but not much better than a good 22. In fact, I wish I still had my 22 Ruger Single Six. For me, at the time, the SS was hard to beat. Even compared to the "new" 17 caliber. JMO

Well, target shooting is always fun and I usually go thru a box of 500 pretty quick on a day.
But I want to get like a 8-12'' barrel and a scope for squirrel hunting.

I dont hunt anything big, definetly not groundhog.
squirrels and an occasional rabbit is about it.

The main thing about the 22 is Ive pulled rounds out that didnt even make it thru the hide sometimes.
A raccoon I can understand, but a squirrel doesnt exactly have a tough hide.
I was thinking about getting the 17 after reading so many good articles on it.

Accuracy shouldnt be any issue at all with the longer barrel length.
My Silhouette (12'' barrel) was really accurate but I had an older model that didnt have a scope mount.

I guess I want it for some target shooting and some squirrel hunting.
