got a new hog gun the other day an was wondering if anybody has any experiance with this particular weapon.( i already have this caliber in a pistol) I will be handloading for this rifle as i do all my weapons.I probably will use hard cast bullets from LBT.This rifle has a 16" bbl and fiber optic type sights. This weapon will be used for very close range, very mad wild boar.Any advise would be much appreciated.

Pruhdir,
There are a few of us "cloneheads" posting on the >454 in the 92 action threads.
Lood for "Range report of a .454" and wade on in.
There is a lot of info and load data burried in the long discourse of postings.
I believe you will greatlly enjoy that little thumper.
I have run a few boxes of BuffaloBore 360's through mine. Not all at one sitting I guarentee! She bucks a bit with heavy Casull loads.
Enjoy,
Scotty

Scotty, thanks for the info.Talked to the Hornady techs the other day, they say their .452/300gr stock#45235 is good to 2200fps. I'll stick w/ the hard lead w/ the wide meplat anyway.I know that they "cut" wide and deep. Good shootin'---pruhdlr
My son has a Puma 454. It seems to like 300 grain or heavier bullets. We tried to find a good plinking load with 250 and 255 grain bullets, but it just won't shoot well with them.
Also, we discovered the groups got significantly smaller if we load the 300 grain bullets shorter. 1.7" overall length shoots better than 1.8" overall length. Confirmed it with two different 300 grain bullets.
It does well with 6 - 7 grains of titegroup under a 300 grain bullet, loaded short. Shoots 1.6 - 3" 5 shot groups at 50 yards.
Now we will start looking for a good hunting load.
What kind of fiber optic sights do you have and where did you get them? Does a standard winchester 92 sight fit? I thought the dovetail was different from a winchester.

The fiber optic sights came on the weapon. They are great(even i can see them).2 green dots rear and one red dot front. The sights don't seem to have alot of travel up-down. This could be a problem w/ some loads. They work fine w/ the 265gr's that i'm shooting.----pruhdlr
