I broke the finger lever screw on my 1958 39A (S/N R18....). The replacement screw from Marlin is too small--the threads are correct but the head/shank diameter are too small.

Marlin doesn't have the old-style screw. I've looked everywhere and can't find an old-style finger lever screw. And I mean everywhere. I've probably spent more on long distnace telephone calls than the screw is worth...

If you have an older Marlin 39A and are willing to remove your finger lever screw, measure it in every imaginable way and send me the specifications, I would really appreciate it...

The measurements I need are shown in the attached .pdf file.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.

I have a '54 and can disassemble it. I don't have calipers here and will have to mike it at work. You should be able to get the screw specifications from a gunsmith- most ( should ) have reference books on obsolete parts. There are still a few gunsmiths around that know how to make screws.

I am not sure if the specs for the '54 are the same for a '58.

They list the part but don't have any in stock. As you might expect, they tell you to try back periodically as they are always looking to expand their inventory.

Brownell's offers a list of sources for obsolete parts and I called nearly everyone on the list, regardless of location. I think I even called one guy in Canada. Nobody had one in stock.

My local smith apparently doesn't have the specs or he would have machined one to spec. The one he made fit too tightly and you can't put the gun back together without some amount of play in the lever.

Thanks for the wish of luck, though.

My local smith apparently doesn't. I should be able to tell from the measurements you provide if the screw is the correct one for my gun.

Thank you so much for yoru offer. I look forward to hearing from you with some measurements.

Braze the head of the screw and then turn it down with the brass and steel offset should make a unique though not correct patina to the old marlin. Just a thought.
