I have a 94 trapper .44 mag. Will this gun take a peep sight without drilling and tapping? Does anyone make a forward barrel mount for Scout scoping?
Is Williams the best choice?

Depends on when it was made, really. You will have to D&T for a tang sight (tangs D&T for sights were discontinued on the Flatbands) and unless it's a .44 from 1967-1972 you will have to D&T for a receiver mounted sight. There is a scout type mount for the '94s, I just can't think of it now.
Also, I believe someone makes a sight that uses the two rear most holes on top of the receiver.

I am interested in the Williams type peep sight, no tang sight.
Or a forward rail on the barrel.

Thanks.

32 views and my question is still unanswered.

If it's got tapped holes, it will take a side apature without puting in new holes...if it don't it won't.

Are some muzzle loadng type peeps (Willimas I belive) that can be made to work using the rear two scope mounting holes...BUT it it either overlaps the rear of the reciever or is held on by one screw. Dissasseembly of the sight and drilling the SIGHT for a new mounting hole cures the one-hole-mounting problem and gets it centered....or using the two exiosting holes and cuttong off the offending overhang.

Problem with the top only mounted apature is that it nearly always requires a change in front sight (to a taller one).

I called Williams up today and got an answer.
Yes, they make a peep ight that screws into the rear base screws.
No drilling and tapping required.
They also make a front firesight.
cool beans.
thanks anyways ya'll

When you get them, maybe you could post the part numbers here for someone else with your same question!

Let us know how they work out for you!

I'm still looking for someone to make a sight for the 94 set up like the M1 carbine sight. Nope, not old-timey looking or allowing an absolutely precise target-shooting adjustment, but simple, rugged, and easily adjusted for the shorter ranges that I use my Trapper for. One of these days I'm going to have to make my own, I guess.
Good shooting,
HP

Sorry, I didn't get here sooner. XS now makes a scope base that works on the newer 94"s for scout set-ups, there is one critical dimension. The rear site dovetail must be 4 inches from front of reciever. Natchez, has them in this month's sale catalog.

What height front sight did Williams recommend for your 94, since their receiver sight mounts in the scope base holes?? I assume that you trapper has a 16 inch barrel??

Please keep us posted, thanks.

There are two peep sights that will work:
5D-94SE (economy)
FP-94SE (micrometer adjustable)

Concerning front fire sight:
If your front site has a ramp - .343 high
If your front site is dovetailed into the barrel - .538

Remember, this is for the newer production 94's (side ejects). I have a chart that lists the part numbers for the top ejects (FP94/36 & 5D-94/36).
In addition, the big bore model 94 takes a different set-up than what I listed above. (FP94BBSE) Doesn't list the economy model.

This info came from a Williams technical staff member.
I hope it is useful info.

Good luck all.

Jonnyringo-

I've got the Williams F/P on six of my Leverguns and I can say that I've always been very happy with their performance. You can also order smaller apertures for sighting in and then use the standard size for hunting; or leave the aperture out for a "ghost ring" type sight.

The firesight front beads are nice also; and do seem to help when the light is dim in the evening and morning hours. Just don't expect them to work any better than a regular bead just before dark. You can get the Firesight sets for the Winchester 94 and Marlin 336 which will usually save a few pennies than buying them separately.

Hope this helps, :)

I have been using the Williams 5d and firesite for a couple of years now.

The fire site has a smaller bead than most others and is therefore quite precise. They are too tight for the Winchester dovetail and need some filing and sanding to make them fit. If you transport in a cloth case, the firesite grabs lint. It is also a bit fragile if you bump or bang it.

The 5D receiver sight works fine except the screws that hold the adjustment sliders for the side-to-side are brittle. With a short handled screw driver it is quite easy to break out the slots in the screw heads. Do now overtighten the screws that go into the site body. Hard, brittle screws going into much softer alluminum. You have to be careful.

Does Lyman ot any other company make peep sights for the Model 94?

Lyman still makes their excellent model 66 sight for the 94, but only for those that are drilled and tapped on the left side of the receiver. Great sights, slightly more bulky than the Williams due to their quick-release/adjustment feature. I have both the Lyman and Williams sights, and like them both, have preference for the Lyman on those guns that I shoot different ammo in on a regular basis (such as on 44's and .357's where you might shoot magnums and specials interchangably, the Lyman sight can be set for the magnums, then the sliding index on the side for a secondary load, and switch between the sighting settings in half a second).

God Bless,

Thanks Marshall! I guess it would be more cost effective to buy the Williams considering I would need to have a gunsmith install the Lymans.
Wish Lyman made one that used the base screws.
I like the Lyman products.

Hi Marshall:

I just bought a 66A Lyman for my Puma m92 in 454. It doesn't have holes for it. Puma puts a firing pin swivel block safety on top of the receiver. How should I deal with that? Try to put the aperature over top of it and have a tighter space to work the safety? Isnt it important to have an aperature sight as close to the eye as possible? Do you find the hunting aperature big enough for dark woods. I missed one in PA once because I got out in the woods with my muzzle loader and couldnt see.
