I was going to refinish the stock on my Marlin 30AS but I cannot get the fore end off. I don't want to force anything. I took the two screws out of the end and slid the cover foreward and it doesnt appear that anything else is holding it on. Whats the deal?

You'll have to take the magazine tube off first. Take out the magazine spring by removing the plug at the front of the tube. Carefull with the spring.Take off or loosen the barrel band(s, depending on model). Tip the rifle barrel down and catch the magazine follower. Slide the tube out the front. Now tip the forend down at the front a bit and pull it ahead. Note that some barrel band screws go through notches in the magazine tube, and they must be lined up when you're reassembling. Put the magazine follower in before you replace these screw(s).
