View Full Version : Can the 500 mag be fired 1 handed?
500 magnum nut

Last spring, I broke my shooting hand (at work), and the hand took 6-7 months before it didn't hurt anymore. Sometimes the simplest movements would send me yelping all over the place. Now I'm back to normal and shooting anything again, but I am afraid to shoot the S&W Model 500 with one hand using 400+ grain loads. Honestly, could it be done?

I posted a video of me doing it.
It ain't pretty, but I did it.
It was only my second round through it.
I KNOW my stance was wrong, and I haven't had
a chance to try again. But here is a short clip.

500 magnum nut, I have shot my S&W500 and my BFR in 500MAG one handed several times. It is not bad at all. I shoot the 440 gr. bullets. :D
Interesting how your two shooting buddies backed away.

Yea, they were more worried about getting hit by the
gun than they were bullet fragments.

But, most importantly, did you hit what you were aiming at?

I just read that there is a "light" load for the 500. Kinda like a light tank I suppose. Still in all it's a 275 gr and is reported to have 2/3 to 1/2 the recoil of the 400+ gr loads. Personally, I'd work up with a 44 mag or something. Prayer would be good too!

Rylos1 -
not sure who your question was directed at.
I managed to hit a 6x6" square steel target
that was about ... heck if I know, 50 feet away.
Maybe 100. I'm a terrible judge of distance.
Corbon has a lighter load out, but there are other
ammo makers which will custom load anything you want.
http://www.customcartridge.com
said they are extremely busy right now, but are very
interested in creating some very light "cowboy action"
loads for me.
In a different thread, I asked Redhawk1 if he sold reloads.
Haven't gotten a reply from him yet.

Hi, i saw your video in which you seem be hitten by the mighty 500............just 2 question.......how tight was your gun grip? I have a 454 ruger 7'' 1/5 ....how badder is the recoil compared to a 454 casull?
And just one more question.............
Where is that beautiful snowy place??
PS i have problem to download other videos

My grip was only strong enough to hold onto the gun.
(not a "strong" grip at all)
I have never shot a 454, so I can't personally compare the
two. I have read that the S&W 500 doesn't recoil as much
as the 454 for two reasons. One, the overall mass of the
500 is significantly more, which helps control the recoil.
Second, the 500 is factory ported, while most 454s aren't.
I've read that the 500 magnum's recoil compares to an
unported 44 magnum.
I do have experience with a 44, and I can attest that this
is a false claim. I posted video of me shooting a 44 magnum
and the 500 magnum. The 44 didn't appear to push me
backwards at all, while the 500 knocked me off balance.
I ordered some Garrett 44 magnum loads which are right
at the limit for pressure. I will compare them to the
500 and see how that compares.
Finally, the first videos were taken in Amboy, Illinois.
I bought a 22 autoloader from a dealer (Troy Chandler)
there. When I picked it up, I took my 500 so he could
give it a try.
He describes his property as "10 miles east of BFE".
The last video I posted was shot at the public gun range in Princeton, Iowa.

dwebb210, I sent you a PM about reloads yesterday.
Redhawk1
Cor-bon loads 275, 350, 400 and 440 grain bullet weights to about the same velocity: 1625-1675 fps. That means, that with the Cor-bon loads, the heavier the bullet, the more the recoil. Start one-handed with the lightest bullet, and work up until it hurts.

I know with a 350gr Hornady load in the .500, you can hit an 8" target at 45 yards. That is with the gun resting on an ATV.
I wish I had tried shooting it one handed, its not that bad with the 350gr loads. I've shot two pistol gripped 12 gauges at the same time (one in each hand obviously...lol) , how much worse could it be... :D

ANY gun can be fired one handed. Just choose how long you want your hand in a cast and choose the appropriate firearm.

For the full horse power loads...yes I have lace on my panties!!! :p

Makes me remember back when I was a kid and I tried to shoot a Clint Eastwood .44 one handed. Stance was really wrong and I ended up burying the hammer in my head. What a mess....the gun really needed a cleaning after that one.... ;)

I skip cans with my 454 Casull using casull 300gr XTP's, one handed;) no problem as long as your arm and wrist is strong enough, I was a bodybuilder for over 20 years, no problem for me. Now try one handed double action and still be accurate, not a easy task. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.
