View Full Version : Peter Hathaway Capstick
Capstick was one of our most prolific writers on African hunting. After his pinstripes to professional hunter career, I believe he did most of his writing in the US. He certainly had a colorful style (OK, he was a master of purple prose) and I always enjoyed his "been there, done that" perspective and interest in history. His "Death in....." series is one of my favorites.
I never heard when, where and how he died. Can anyone help?

Yeah man,
I have about 4 or 5 of Capsticks books. Love 'em all. He really gives you a feeling for being there. He is easily my favorite of the "african" writers. Don't know much about how he died but I believe he lived in Florida when he passed.
Have several of his "Death in The......." books. Only critical comment I have is that is usually took him a loooooooooong time to get around to the hunting aspect.

I read that PHC died here in FL while undergoing a bypass surgery. Much like Hemingway or Ruark, Capstick would have been such an awesome person to meet and spend some time just shooting it with.
E--Thanks for the info. After all the close calls and as hard as he worked to stay alive in the bush, I was afraid it was going to be something like that.

Capstick was a great gun writer. I always enjoyed reading his African tales. It was a sad day when he passed away.

I loved Capstick, also, and have most of his books. In fact, i just finished "Safari". Agree with Bill M, always felt like i was there, even when he was writing about someone else's experiences. I know that some of the other writers thought that he overly embellished his experiences, but so be it. He was there, and they weren't.
