View Full Version : 375 Win. Bullet Size for Contender Carbine?

With my new 375 win Barrel, 22" long, full bull, what are my options in choosing bullets for my Contender Carbine? Of course factory loads would be the std. 200 and 220 grain, but what about a spitzer bullet with something sharper than the standard flat nose type? And how heavy a bullet will be acceptable in the Contender? I see a 210 Barnes available, but does anyone have experience going over 220?

Thanks!

I use a 255 gr Barnes original in my M94 Big Bore. It has a flat point, but I have it going 1900+ f/s using RL 7. The larger .375 bullets with spitzer points are made for the .375 H&H and may not open up at .375 Win velocities.

Beartooth offers a 375-255gSPGC bullet with a long ogive and gas checked if you're interested in a cast bullet for your application.

I too would caution about using the spitzer configuration .375's commercially offered on the market for use in the .375 Win in light of the design perameters of the bullet. It was designed for the velocities of the belted magnum .375's and if using them on game will not perform satisfactorily on game, but rather will act much like an FMJ.

Due to the limited velocity potential of the .375 Winchester, it's really doubtful that using the spitzer design bullets would really gain you that much in terms of trajectory improvement over the useful range of the cartridge's applications. It is intended for, and does a great job as a short to mid-range cartridge, and within those applications the available FN bullets do an admirable job.

God Bless,
