Any thoughts or experience with the Mossberg SSI Single Shot Rifles?
I read a fair bit about them, mostly positive reviews.
Then last week I finally got to see and handle one at a local gunshop here in Calgary.
This one was a sporter in 270 Winchester.
It looks good and the balance is great and of course the price is excellent.
I was really tempted but I was actually in the market for a smaller caliber & ended up buying a Winchester Classic Featherweight in 243 Win.
But, I can't get the Mossberg out of my mind!!

If it's callin' to ya, you better run out and buy it, or you'll never get any sleep again!!! (until you find a better deal, or a new rifle to lust after!, that is.) One shots are a sickness, so don't give in!!!

I'm partial to Brownchester Highwalls myownself, so don't even look at those! (Too much competition for them already)

I bought one when they first came out in the caliber you mentioned. Had a few negative points:
1. Did not shoot as accurate as I thought it should, shot about 4 or 5 boxes of different brands, and some handloads. Couldn't not find the right combo!

2. The break open action was so tight, it was frustrating to handle.

3. The gun even though is compact so to speak is relatively heavy, not a pleasure to carry all day long.

Decided after four months to trade it in, and never looked at another.

You have to decide for yourself, but talk to others before you do. If you miss this one, there's always more out there.

That rifle is also built in .223 caliber.

I have one in 30-06 and have an extra 12 Ga Slug Barrel. Haven't shot the Slug Barrel yet but have shot the 06 barrel a lot. Average groups are between 1.5 to 2.5 inch.
As magshooter said they are tight and are also heavy for the type of gun they are. Mine came with a super heavy trigger pull but I took care of that in short order. I don't want to carry it in the field but if stand hunting it would be OK.
Now if some of our friends from the far North can find a 308 Winchester barrel for the SSI I would be vey thankful. I don't think there are any left in the US of A. Thanks for any info.

I also have an NEF in 223 and was also disappointed with accuracy. Burned up a lot of ammo trying to get a handle on it. Trigger had to be worked on a bit to be acceptable, and some fine polishing made the action work a lot better. Not so sure I would fight with another one. My Marlin 444P is more accurate with factory ammo, and a better trigger!!

NEF/H&R rifles are just like any other rifle, you need to shoot what they like or handload for em....there are lots of NEF/H&R shooters at GBO that have rifles that shoot sub ½moa regularly with factory ammo. Mey .223 Ultra Varmint will do it too, as well as my .243 Ultra and 30-06 UltraComp....Trigger jobs are easy once you know how and have an hour or so spare time....

You can learn a lot about H&R rifles at the Graybeard Outdoors NEF/H&R Centerfire forum....
