I am going to shoot my hard cast loads today if it does not rain. I've put the smaller ghost ring on to hopefully shrink the groups a little. If this does not work I will return to the buckhorn, probably. I used to be pretty good at the challenges I placed on myself hunting wise but with my eyes failing I have been alittle hard on myself. Catarac surgery is looking better and better.

I will let y'all know how the shooting goes today.

I had a very productive day. The smaller ghost ring did help my 50 yd groups with the 1894. The H-110 cast load is excellent and my 44 special plinking load for the SBH was simply awesome. I have no load development left now so I will spend the summer gettin better at hitting what I aim at and loading back up.

I spent the afternoon shooting/sighting in my 1894SS, but so far my load development has been a joke. Nothing shot better than two inches at fifty yards, and that's not acceptable. To make matters worse, I'm getting weird flyers for no apparent reason, like four inches to the right, and I can't figure it out. My first suspicion was the scope or mounts were loose, but I can't make it wiggle in any direction. I tried both jacketed and cast loads, hot and medium, even a few 44 Specials, but while some groups were okay, the flyers wouldn't quit for more than 5 or 6 shots. The scope is a new Simmons, but I'm still a little suspicious, the adjustments don't seems very repeatable. I may just put the stinkin' peep sight back on it and see if it still throws wild shots around, but as bad as my eyes are getting, I'm not sure I can shoot it past 25 yards accurately. I'm glad my 336C and 1894C are shooting well, this one's gonna make me crazy!

I would continue to think about something moving. Also the forestock on these things do some wierd stuff to a warming barrel. ( I am sure you have read the stuff I have done so far.) Shoot a cool clean barrel for group next time out after remounting the scope and making sure all screws ar tight on the whole gun.

papa,

Are the fliers on the first shot of the group? Are you checking after each individual shot to see where it landed?

My 1894SS only liked 300gr .431" lead bullets at 1380-1440 fps, it wouldn't shoot a 240gr lead bullet of any dia at any speed at 100 yds.

Yeah, they do make you crazy! I'm having the same problem with my 1894.
