The base pin on my sbh wont stay put. The recoil pops it right out. Has anyone else had a problem like this and how do I fix it? Thanks.....Flinch

YES, it's a common problem. i have two (superblackhawk, and blackhawk in .45LC). i have done an internet search on this topic, and have found a couple of remedys. the first is an aftermarket base pin that has a screw going thru it and into a hole in the bottom of the barrel. the second makes more sense to me. it involves fitting the base pin (where the latch fits into the notch) so that the latch fully engages the pin. the site (i don't remember where) said it's common for the notch in the base pin to be undersized, therefore the latch cannot slide fully into it. the notch is carefully enlarged until the latch bottoms out . i'm going to also try to find a extra strong latch spring. that's all i have found. maybe there are other people that have more info for us.

Yeah, a few things.

First, make sure the plunger screw is tight (it holds the spring in it and comes loose in some cases).

Second... go to www.beltmountain.com . They make aftermarket base pins that feature locking features on them. Nice people to deal with too.

Wolf gunsprings can sell you an extra strength latch spring.

Looks like Monty has a better working knowlege of this than I do. Hope this helps.

Enlarging the notch in the base pin may cure the problem . Installing a heavier base pin spring will 9 times out of 10 fix the problem for good . Brownells.com is a great source for gunsmithing supplies . They sell a heavier spring for this . The only special tool you will need to change it is a flat screwdriver with a notch ground out of the center of it to fit the back side of the pin plunger . They sell this as well , or you can make your own . They also sell replacement base pins , including oversize pins , which will clean up the side to side slop in your cylinder . Belt Mountain makes an excellent replacement pin . Hope This Helps ! Rick

I will look into a Belt Mountain base pin, I like the idea of it locking in place, maybe i will get an oversized one to clean up some slop while am at it. Thanks again... Flinch

Belt Mountain makes a good product, and I have several of them, but I also never had a base pin jump except under the following two conditions:

1. Base pin lubricated with super-slick oil containing Teflon,
2. Base pin latch not fully 'grabbing' the pin. Filed the slot in the pin a bit deeper and solved that problem.

Installed new Belt Mtn. locking base pin and wolf extra power latch spring last night. It did tighten up the cylinder a bit too. I dont think it will come out again. As far as the locking screw goes I just snuged it againts the barrel, tight but not too tight. Has anyone drilled a small indentation for the lock screw to sit or is just snug against the barrel good enough?
