Interested in a spring (of 05) black bear hunt on the POW island. Anyone hunted there either with a guide or on your own? Any suggestions?

I lazy hunted there many times when I lived in Sitka. At that time we could cruise along the shore in a boat and pop our quota of deer in a tough 2-3 hours of hunting. Bear were almost as prevalent but at that time I had no interest in shooting one. There is a good deal of beaver and marten and for those who like sitting in a cold boat waiting for the tide to re-float them there are ducks and geese. Let's face it, the Tlingits knew a fine buffet table when they saw one.
There are more guides than you can shake a stick at and most are reasonable good. If you are headed for a trophy bear I suggest buying a stairmaster. The Boreal forest is constantly wet and slippery. The land seems to rise straight out of the water and the hills can be very steep. Bears love fresh salmon but they do not ignore the berries.
I expect that a good guide will put a bear in your sights in the first day and you will find one worth shooting within the week. Go with a guide that will get you some fishing also.

There are a few topics here at Beartooth about hunting on Prince of Wales Island. Look for some some information in the older threads here on the Alaska Hunting Forum.

Previous threads have recommended getting to Craig by ferry and hunting on some of the logging roads. Make sure you know where the private land is and respect their wishes.

If the ferry dumps you off at Hollis at an hour that precludes driving to the north end of the island before getting some sleep, check out the Craig landfill in the evening or morning for a guaranteed view of the bears (no shooting, of course). There always seems to be at least one big bruiser grazing in there.
